Generate romance novel character names that fit the subgenre: Regency dukes and debutantes, small-town sweethearts, billionaires, cowboys, mafia heirs, paranormal alphas and sci-fi captains. Built for romance writers, fanfic authors and anyone naming a love interest.

About romance names

Romance character names do a specific job: they tell the reader which subgenre they are in and what kind of love interest to expect before the first scene ends. Historical heroes carry titles and estate-sounding surnames (Julian Thorne, Duke of Ravensworth; Lord Sebastian Ashcombe), heroines get Miss or Lady plus a soft, slightly old-fashioned given name (Arabella, Genevieve, Eleanor, Phoebe). Contemporary heroes trend toward one- or two-syllable first names that sound like verbs or surnames (Grayson Cole, Rhett Carrington, Colt Brennan), while heroines get warm, current names (Emma, Hazel, Daisy, Sloane). Mafia romance uses Italian and Russian family names; paranormal romance favors dark nature words (Blackthorn, Nightshade, Ravenwood) and archaic first names like Lucien, Caspian and Selene.

The unwritten rule is that the two leads should not sound alike. Editors flag pairs that share a first letter or a rhythm (Jake and Jane), so a Regency duke named Julian pairs better with a Charlotte than with a Juliana. Surnames matter too, since the heroine may take his by the epilogue, and series authors build whole family trees on one surname (the Callahan brothers, the Whitfield sisters).

This list covers heroes and heroines across Regency, Highland, small-town, billionaire, cowboy, military, rockstar, mafia, sports, paranormal and sci-fi romance, with enough international names to cast a multicultural contemporary.

How to choose romance names

  • Pick the subgenre first, then the name: a hero called Lucien Darkmore reads as paranormal, so he will confuse readers in a small-town bakery romance where Jake Callahan belongs.
  • Give the two leads different first letters, syllable counts and stress patterns so their names never blur together in dialogue or in the blurb.
  • Say the heroine's name with the hero's surname out loud; if the epilogue gives her his name, Emma Sinclair should still sound good.
  • Use titles and honorifics (Lady, Captain, Dr., Lieutenant) only when the role drives the plot, and drop them in close scenes where the characters use first names.
  • Choose one repeatable surname if you are planning a series, and check that it has sibling-friendly first names available (Eli, Lainey and Hazel all work before Brooks).

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good romance hero name?

Strong consonants, one or two syllables, and a surname that sounds like a place, a trade or an old family: Grayson Cole, Rhett Carrington, Dante Moretti. Historical heroes add a title, paranormal heroes add an archaic first name, and cowboys get nicknames that could be verbs (Colt, Cash, Boone).

What makes a good romance heroine name?

Something warm, easy to say and slightly softer than the hero's name, so the pairing has contrast. Contemporary heroines skew toward Emma, Hazel, Daisy and Sloane; Regency heroines toward Arabella, Eleanor and Phoebe; paranormal heroines toward Selene, Raven and Seraphine.

Can I use these names in a published novel?

Yes. The names here are fictional pairings of common first names and surnames, so they are not tied to any real person. Because the parts are common, coincidental matches are possible, so a quick search before publishing is good practice, especially for villains.

Does this generator cover LGBTQ+ romance?

The list includes both masculine and feminine names, and any two names can be paired. For an M/M Regency, pull two titled heroes; for an F/F small-town romance, pair two of the contemporary heroines. The subgenre conventions about contrast and rhythm apply the same way.
