About realistic names

A realistic name is one a reader accepts without noticing it. That usually means a first name that was genuinely popular in the decade the person was born and a surname that reflects a real family history: occupational English surnames such as Whitaker or Fletcher, Spanish patronymics such as Rodriguez and Mendoza, Polish, Nigerian, Vietnamese and Korean surnames spelled the way families in the English-speaking world actually spell them. The names here pair those elements the way a census page does, so Harold Stansfield reads like a retired machinist and Paisley Gunderson reads like a ten-year-old.

The list deliberately spans generations and backgrounds. Pre-war names such as Mildred, Clarence and Bernice sit beside 1980s staples like Jennifer, Brian and Stephanie and current favourites such as Aiden, Harper and Mateo. There are also ordered East Asian names (Kang Jin Ho, Chen Weimin), Arabic, South Asian, Turkish, Persian and West African names, because a realistic cast of characters or a plausible sample dataset rarely looks like one suburb.

None of the names belong to a specific public figure; they are plausible combinations rather than copied identities, which makes them safe for mock-ups, placeholder accounts, writing exercises and UX wireframes where lorem-ipsum names look sloppy.

How to choose realistic names

  • Match the first name to the birth year: Dorothy, Harold and Mildred read as people in their eighties, Jennifer and Jason as people in their forties, Aiden and Harper as children. A mismatch is the fastest way to break realism.
  • Keep surnames ordinary for ordinary characters. A hero called Kendra Whitlow or Marcus Delgado feels real; a hero called Raven Nightshade feels written.
  • Vary rhythm across a cast: mix one-syllable surnames (Cole, Tran, Pike) with longer ones (Kalogeropoulos, Villanueva) so a page of dialogue tags does not blur.
  • For test data or mock profiles, draw from several cultural backgrounds and both genders in proportions that suit your audience, and avoid names with ambiguous ordering unless your form handles them.
  • Run a quick search before using a name for a published character; a plausible combination can still belong to a real professional or a local public figure.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name 'realistic'?

Three things: a first name that was in common use for the character's generation, a surname that belongs to a real naming tradition, and a pairing that plausibly occurs in the place the person lives. Jessica Fairbanks passes all three tests; Jessica Starfall fails the second.

Are these names of real people?

They are plausible combinations, not copied identities. Common first and last names will inevitably be shared by real people somewhere, so do a quick search before naming a published character or a public-facing persona, and never use a generated name to impersonate anyone.

Can I use these for test databases and UI mock-ups?

Yes. They are varied in length, spelling and cultural origin, which is exactly what you want for stress-testing forms, sorting, search and layout. Names like Chen Weimin or Kang Jin Ho also check that your system handles family-name-first ordering.

How do I get a realistic name from a specific culture or era?

Use this page for a broad, contemporary mix, then narrow with a dedicated generator such as the British, American or English name pages, or a decade page like the 1950s Name Generator, when you need a tighter fit.
