Invented Plants That Sound Like They Belong in a Field Guide

Generate random plant names for fictional worlds, games and stories, built the way real folk names are built: Widow's Lace, Frostbriar, Tinker's Bane, Marsh Candle, Sunwort. Every name is invented but follows genuine botanical naming patterns so it feels like a plant a herbalist could actually pick.
About random plant names
Invented plant names fail when they sound like fantasy adjectives bolted onto flower words. Real folk botany doesn't say Crystal Blossom or Shadowleaf Vine; it says Shepherd's Purse, Ragged Robin, Toadflax, Butter-and-Eggs. The names come from working people describing what they saw and what the plant was for, using a small set of building blocks: a possessive owner (a trade, an animal, a saint, a devil), a homely object the flower resembles (bell, cup, thimble, lantern, taper, purse, comb), a habitat word (fen, hedge, ditch, cliff), or an Old English suffix such as -wort for a useful herb and -bane for a poison.
Every name in this list was built from those blocks. Tinker's Thimble, Hangman's Rope and Beggar's Buttons sound like they came out of a 17th-century herbal even though they didn't; Fen Lantern and Ditch Daisy tell you exactly where to find them; Rotbane and Fever Bane tell you what they kill or cure. Because the pattern is consistent, readers of your story or players of your game will intuitively understand a new plant the first time they see its name.
Use the list to stock an alchemist's shop, write a herbalism skill tree, fill a fantasy field guide, or name the weeds a character notices on a walk. Pair each name with a short property and you have a plausible piece of the natural world.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide the plant's role first, then pick the suffix: -wort for a healing herb, -bane for a poison or repellent, -cress or -vetch for a common edible weed.
- Give each fictional region its own possessive vocabulary; coastal villages name plants after sailors and wrecks, mining towns after lanterns and tunnels.
- Object words carry shape information for free: a Bell droops, a Lantern glows or is round, a Taper is a tall spike, a Cup faces upward.
- Keep most names to two words and mostly one-syllable parts; long compound names like Sapphire Rainblossom read as artificial.
- Reuse a component across several names (Marsh Candle, Bog Candle, Hedge Candle) so players and readers learn your world's botany the way they'd learn real families.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real plants?
No. Every name here is invented, but each one is assembled from the same parts real English folk names use, so they sit comfortably beside genuine plants like Foxglove or Shepherd's Purse.
How do I make my own plant names sound realistic?
Combine a possessive owner or habitat word with an ordinary household object or an Old English suffix. Miller's Dust, Cliff Candle and Sleepwort all follow that formula; avoid gemstone and 'shadow' adjectives, which real names never used.
Can I use these plant names in a published game or novel?
Yes. The names are free to use in commercial and personal projects with no attribution required.
What's the difference between this and the plant name generator?
The plant name generator lists real common names for existing flowers, herbs and houseplants. This one produces invented plants for worldbuilding that follow the same conventions.
