Random Name Generator in Excel

Excel does not ship with a name dictionary, so a random name generator in Excel is always two parts: a list of names, and a formula or macro that picks from it. The list above gives you 180 common American full names, built from the most frequent first names and surnames in US Census and Social Security data, so it looks like a real roster for raffles, seating charts, sample invoices or a mock CRM.

The classic formula is =INDEX($A$2:$A$181, RANDBETWEEN(1, COUNTA($A$2:$A$181))). Each press of F9 draws a new name. Excel 365 and Google Sheets add dynamic arrays: =SORTBY(A2:A181, RANDARRAY(180)) shuffles every name, and wrapping it in TAKE(...,5) gives five unique winners with no repeats. If you want first and last names mixed independently, keep them in two columns and join two INDEX/RANDBETWEEN calls with & " " &. For a click-to-draw button, a three-line VBA macro (Range("C2").Value = Range("A2:A181").Cells(WorksheetFunction.RandBetween(1,180)).Value) assigned to a shape does the job.

One caution: RAND, RANDBETWEEN and RANDARRAY are volatile, so results change on every edit anywhere in the workbook. Copy and Paste Special as Values as soon as you have a draw you want to keep, especially for prize winners.
