Mexican names follow Spanish naming custom with a few local twists. A full legal name has a given name (often two, like José Luis or María Guadalupe), then the father's surname, then the mother's surname: Juan Carlos Rodríguez Treviño. In everyday use only the first surname is used, which is why the most common surnames in Mexico, Hernández, García, Martínez, López, González, Pérez, Rodríguez, and Sánchez, appear so often. Compound given names built on José, María, Juan, and Luis are extremely common; a man named José Luis is called José Luis, never José.

Mexico also has a large stock of Nahuatl and Maya given names that are rare elsewhere in the Spanish-speaking world: Xóchitl (flower), Citlali (star), Itzel, Yaretzi, Cuauhtémoc, Tonatiuh, and Nezahualcóyotl. Older generations carry names taken from Marian titles and religious feasts, such as Guadalupe, Refugio, Socorro, Concepción, Rosario, and Asunción, many of which are used for both men and women. Regional surnames also give a name texture: Treviño, Elizondo, and Villarreal read as northern (Nuevo León); Zúñiga, Cisneros, and Ontiveros are common in the Bajío and Jalisco.

Get the accents right (Hernández, Núñez, Ángel, Óscar). They are part of the spelling, not decoration.
