Radio Segment Name Generator
Names for the features inside your show
Generate names for the recurring segments inside a radio show or podcast: call-in bits like The Listener Line, games like Guess That Intro, slots like Traffic and a Track, and weekly features like Three Things Thursday.
About radio segment names
A segment is a feature inside a show, not the show itself: the two minutes of traffic, the guessing game before the news, the listener voicemail that closes a podcast. A good segment name works as an announcement. The host says it, a jingle plays, and regular listeners know what is about to happen, so the strongest names say what happens in them. Guess That Intro is a game about song intros. Traffic and a Track is a traffic update followed by a song. First Caller Picks the Song needs no explanation at all.
Three devices do most of the work. A clock time or a day fixes the slot in the schedule (The Five O'Clock Fix, Three Things Thursday, New Music at Nine). Alliteration and rhyme make a name easy to say live. And a plain description (Small Town Headlines, Voicemail of the Week) ages better than a joke.
The list covers call-in features, contests and games, music features, news, weather, traffic and sports slots, morning-show bits, interview and guest features, listener mail and shout-outs, school and college radio, podcast segments from cold open to sign-off, and weekly features named for a day. For the name of a whole program, use the Radio Show Name Generator.
How to choose radio segment names
- Name the action. If a new listener can tell from the name what happens (Finish the Lyric, Ask the Librarian), the host does not have to explain the rules every time.
- Tie a feature to a time or a day only if you can keep the appointment. New Music at Nine is a promise, while Fresh Track, Honest Take can run whenever there is room.
- Say it aloud with your jingle or theme under it. Names of three to five words with a strong first beat are the easiest to announce cleanly.
- Keep listener features kind. People call back when a feature makes them sound good, so shout-outs, small wins and friendly votes are safer ground than putting a caller on the spot.
- Search before you commit. Some well-known segment names belong to syndicated shows, so make sure yours is not one your listeners already know from another station.
Frequently asked questions
What is a radio segment?
A recurring feature inside a program, usually a few minutes long, with its own name and often its own jingle. Traffic and weather slots, call-in games, interviews and listener mail are all segments. Examples from this list are The Two-Minute Forecast and The Listener Line.
Do these names work for podcast segments?
Yes. One group is written for podcasts, with names for each part of an episode, such as The Cold Open, The Tangent Timer, Voicemail of the Week and The Sign-Off Shout-Out. Most of the radio names work in a podcast as well.
What are good names for a morning show segment?
Morning features tend to be short and tied to the routine of getting out the door. Try Snooze or No Snooze, Dad Joke of the Day, Out the Door in Five or The Carpool Question.
How is this different from the Radio Show Name Generator?
That page names whole programs. This one names the parts inside a program, so each entry describes a game, a slot or a listener feature instead of the show's brand.
