About podcast episode names
A podcast episode title has one job: make someone tap play from a list of fifty other episodes. The titles that work almost always do one of five things. They ask a question the listener already has (Is Hustle Culture Finally Dead?), promise a concrete outcome (How to Fire a Client Gracefully), tell a story with a name and a place in it (The Unsolved Fire at Mill Creek), signal a format the regulars love (A Very Awkward Listener Mailbag, Season Finale: What Comes Next), or take a stance that invites disagreement (The Case Against Open Offices). Vague titles like Episode 14 or Chatting With Jordan give the listener nothing to grab.
Length matters more than most hosts realize. Apple Podcasts and Spotify truncate titles at roughly 40 to 60 characters on a phone, so the hook needs to land in the first few words. Put the guest's name or the keyword at the front, not after a colon at the end, and skip the show name and episode number inside the title itself, since every app already displays them.
This list mixes all five formats across true crime, business, comedy, wellness, parenting, history, food, tech and interview shows. Swap in your own names, places and numbers to make a template fit your episode.
Tips for choosing a name
- Front-load the hook: the first five or six words are all that show in most podcast apps, so lead with the question, the name or the payoff rather than 'In this episode we...'.
- Keep episode numbers and the show name out of the title field; apps display both already, and they push the actual hook off the screen.
- Use a consistent title style across a season (all questions, all story chapters, all 'How to') so regular listeners can recognise the format at a glance.
- Be specific with names, numbers and places: The Rental Car That Wasn't There outperforms A Travel Story every time, because specificity signals a real story.
- Write the title after you record, not before. The best hook is usually a line someone actually said during the episode.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a podcast episode title be?
Aim for under 60 characters, and ideally under 45. Phone screens in Apple Podcasts and Spotify cut titles off around that point, so anything important after it will never be seen in the feed. If you need more context, put it in the episode description instead.
Should I put the guest's name in the episode title?
Yes if the guest is someone your audience recognises, and put it at the front (Maya Okafor on Quitting Academia) rather than at the end. If the guest is unknown to most listeners, lead with the topic and mention the name in the description.
Do episode titles matter for podcast SEO?
They matter a lot. Podcast apps and Google index episode titles, so a title that contains the phrase someone would actually search (negotiating rent, cold plunge, estate planning) can surface an old episode for years. Clever titles work best when they also contain a plain keyword.
Can I reuse these episode titles for my own show?
Yes. Short titles and common phrases are not protected by copyright, and these were written to be adapted. Swap in your own guest names, towns and numbers so the title matches what is actually in the episode.
