About arena names

Real fighting venues have always been named in two registers. The official name is grand and honors a patron: the Colosseum was the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Circus Maximus was Rome's great racecourse, and modern arenas carry a founder, a city landmark or a sponsor. The unofficial name is what fighters and fans actually say, and it is almost always short, physical and slightly menacing: the Pit, the Cage, the Octagon, the Snakepit, the Cauldron, the Jungle, the Barn. A gladiatorial school was a ludus; the fighting surface was harena, sand, which is where the word arena comes from.

Fantasy and game arenas borrow both registers. A grand name uses a form-word (Amphitheatre, Coliseum, Circus, Ring, Bowl, Lists) plus a ruler or place: the Emperor's Sands, the Grand Tiers of Ulm, the Royal Lists. A gritty name is a single loaded noun: the Crucible, the Maw, the Widowmaker, the Meat Grinder.
