Generate authentic Prussian names: noble von families from Brandenburg, Pomerania and East Prussia, everyday townsfolk and farmers with Masurian and Lithuanian surnames, Huguenot Berliners, and the Baltic Old Prussians who lived there before the Teutonic Knights.
About prussian names
A Prussian name usually means one of two things. For most people it is the Kingdom of Prussia of 1701 to 1918: Junker landowners with a von before a short, hard surname (Kleist, Bülow, Zieten, Puttkamer, Dönhoff), given names that ran in families for generations (Friedrich, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Joachim, Luise, Charlotte, Wilhelmine), and the officer-class habit of double names like Friedrich Wilhelm and Hans Joachim. The eastern provinces add something no other German region has: Masurian surnames of Polish origin such as Sadowski and Kulessa, Prussian-Lithuanian names like Kairies, Naujoks and Szameitat, and Pomeranian names ending in -ow and -in (Treptow, Polzin, Zastrow) that come from old Slavic place names.
The second meaning is the Old Prussians, the Baltic people the Teutonic Order conquered in the 13th century. Their names survive only in chronicles and land grants: Herkus Monte, Glande, Diwan, Skomand, Auktume. They sound closer to Lithuanian than German, and are usually recorded with a tribal homeland attached (of Sambia, of Natangia, of Pogesania).
This generator covers both, plus the French Huguenot families (Fontane, Ancillon, du Bois-Reymond) that made up a fifth of Berlin by 1700. Use the noble names for officers and estate owners, the commoner names for soldiers, farmers and Königsberg townsfolk, and the Baltic names for anything set before 1300.
Tips for choosing a name
- Put the von in the right place: it is a nobility particle, not a surname, so Heinrich von Kleist is Herr von Kleist, never Herr Kleist, and it is sorted under K in a Prussian army list.
- Signal the province with the surname: -ow and -in endings (Bredow, Zastrow, Polzin) read Brandenburg and Pomerania, Polish -ski names read Masuria, and -at, -eit and -kus endings (Matzat, Kallweit, Bartkus) read the Lithuanian north-east around Tilsit and Memel.
- Match given names to the reign: Friedrich and Wilhelm dominate the 18th century, Otto, Hermann and Auguste the mid-19th, and Kurt, Erich, Herta and Else the generation born around 1900.
- For an Old Prussian tribal warrior, use a single name plus a homeland (Nakam of Pomesania) rather than a surname, since family names did not yet exist.
- Only a few Junker families were titled Graf or Freiherr; the great majority were plain von, so do not give everyone a count's title.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typical Prussian male name?
For the 18th and 19th centuries, Friedrich, Wilhelm, Karl, Heinrich, Otto, August and Hermann, very often doubled up (Friedrich Wilhelm, Karl Friedrich), paired with a surname such as Schulz, Krüger, Lehmann or, for the nobility, von Kleist or von Bülow. Hans Joachim and Hans Georg were favourite officer names.
Are Prussian names just German names?
Mostly, but the mix is distinctive. East and West Prussia had large Polish, Masurian and Lithuanian populations, so names like Dombrowski, Szameitat and Kairies were as Prussian as Müller. Berlin also had a large Huguenot community, which is why Fontane, Ancillon and Savigny are classic Prussian surnames despite being French.
What were Old Prussian names like?
The original Prussians were a Baltic people related to Lithuanians and Latvians. Recorded names include Herkus Monte, Glande, Diwan, Auktume, Skomand and Glappe, usually with a tribal region attached (Sambia, Natangia, Warmia, Pogesania) instead of a surname. The language died out around 1700.
What does von mean in a Prussian name?
Von marks the old landed nobility, the Junkers, who supplied most of Prussia's officers and civil servants. Families like Moltke, Zieten, Puttkamer and Dönhoff carried it. A few ranked higher as Graf (count) or Freiherr (baron), and zu instead of von usually signals an ancient family still seated on its original estate.
