About fantasy school names

Fictional schools of magic tend to sound like real old universities with one strange word added. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry follows the pattern of an English public school; Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy in The Magicians mimics an American liberal-arts college; Discworld's Unseen University and Dragonlance's Towers of High Sorcery lean on the medieval idea of the university as a guild of scholars in a tower. Real institutions supply the vocabulary: academy, college, lyceum, athenaeum, collegium, conservatory, seminary, institute, scriptorium.

The structure is usually a place name plus an institution word plus an optional discipline: Ravensgate School of Sorcery, Thornfield Academy, the Collegium Arcanum. The place name does most of the work. English-sounding compounds (Ashgrove, Hollowmere, Blackwell) give a boarding-school feel; Latin or Greek forms (Lyceum, Athenaeum, Collegium) suggest age and prestige; a bare "The Tower" or "The Citadel" implies a single fortified building where the whole school lives. Not every fantasy school teaches wizardry either: knightly colleges, bardic conservatories, druid groves, artificer guild-schools and seers' lodges all fit different campaigns.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose the institution word carefully: 'Academy' feels youthful and structured, 'College' collegiate and old, 'Tower' or 'Citadel' isolated and secretive, 'Grove' or 'Circle' natural and druidic.
  • Add a discipline only when it's specific enough to matter (School of Illusion, Academy of Herblore and Hexes); 'of Magic' on every school makes them blur together.
  • Give the school a nickname the students use. Hollowmere Academy of the Arcane Arts becomes 'Hollowmere' or 'the Mere', and that's what appears in dialogue.
  • Consider a founder or patron: 'the Scriptorium of St. Aldous' or 'the King's College of Magic' implies history, funding, and politics without a word of exposition.
  • For a series or campaign, name at least two rival schools so the setting has somewhere for a transfer student or an antagonist to come from.

Should a magic school name mention magic at all?
