A pledge name is the nickname a fraternity or sorority gives each new member during the pledge period, and the good ones stick for life. How to choose pledge names
- Tie the name to a real moment from the first weeks of pledging. 'Sprinkler' means nothing on its own; it is a great name once everyone knows about the night the lawn system turned on.
- Keep it yellable: two or three syllables (Meatball, Sparky, Flapjack) beat a long phrase, and names that rhyme or alliterate with the pledge's real name land even better.
- Roast without wounding. Names about food, clumsiness or fashion age well; names about someone's body, family, or background do not, and most nationals now treat them as hazing.
- Check the chapter's history first. Many houses retire iconic pledge names, and reusing one from a legendary alum can annoy the old heads.
- For a D9-style individual line name, aim for a two-word title that reflects the person's character (Quiet Fire, Saving Grace, Heavy Hitter) rather than a joke, and make sure it pairs well with their line number.
