About persona 5 names

Persona 5 character names follow the conventions of a modern Tokyo high school drama, not a fantasy world. The cast are ordinary Japanese names written Western-style in the English release: Ren Amamiya, Ryuji Sakamoto, Ann Takamaki, Makoto Niijima. The trick Atlus uses is picking given names and surnames that quietly describe the character. Ryuji's surname contains the kanji for 'slope', Yusuke's 'Kitagawa' is a river and Futaba's 'Sakura' ties her to Sojiro. For an original Phantom Thief, choose a plausible two-part name and then let the surname carry a hint of their arcana, their Persona or the adult who wronged them.

The other naming layers are just as important. Every thief takes a one-word Metaverse codename drawn from their outfit or Persona (Skull, Panther, Fox, Queen, Oracle, Noir, Crow, Violet), and every Persona is named for a rebel, trickster or outlaw from myth and fiction: Arsène Lupin, Captain Kidd, Carmen, Goemon, Johanna, Necronomicon, Milady, Zorro, Robin Hood. Royal and Strikers expanded the roster with Cendrillon, Valjean and Zenkichi's Wolf, and the demon compendium supplies hundreds more, from Jack Frost to Satanael.

Canon names come first for reference, then original names that fit at Shujin or Kosei, a bank of Personas and demons, codenames for a new crew, and Palace and Shadow titles for fan campaigns.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the codename after the Persona, not before. Canon codenames describe the outfit and Persona (Fox for Goemon's kitsune mask, Queen for Johanna's biker armour), so decide who your character awakens to and let that suggest a one-word alias.
  • Give an OC a Persona from a story about rebellion or theft that is not already taken. Scheherazade, Robin Goodfellow, Sinbad, Spring-Heeled Jack or one of Sun Wukong's companions all fit the picaresque theme; avoid Arsène, Zorro, Cendrillon or Valjean (Zenkichi's Persona in Strikers), which are already claimed.
  • Keep Japanese names realistic. Two or three syllable given names (Aoi, Kaito, Nanami, Haruto) with common surnames read as classmates; over-elaborate or fantasy-sounding names break the Tokyo setting.
  • For a Palace ruler, follow the formula 'Name's Palace' and a building that reflects a deadly sin (Castle of Lust, Museum of Vanity, Bank of Gluttony). The building should be how the ruler sees their own domain, not how it really looks.
  • If you are naming a confidant, match the arcana's theme: a Hermit keeps to themselves, a Hanged Man is caught between two loyalties, a Star is hopeful. The name and job should suggest the card before you ever show it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the protagonist's real name in Persona 5?

The game lets you choose it. The manga uses Akira Kurusu and the anime, Dancing in Starlight and Strikers use Ren Amamiya, so both appear in fan works. His codename is always Joker and his initial Persona is Arsène.

How do Persona 5 codenames work?

After a Phantom Thief awakens, the group picks a single short word based on their Metaverse outfit or Persona: Ryuji is Skull for his skull mask, Ann is Panther for her catsuit, Futaba is Oracle because she supports from the Necronomicon. Good original codenames are one or two syllables and easy to shout mid-battle.

Are the Persona names real mythological figures?

Yes. Party Personas are picaresque heroes and outlaws from literature and legend, while the compendium draws on world mythology: Norse (Loki, Thor), Japanese (Yatagarasu, Susano-o), Hindu (Shiva, Kali), Judeo-Christian (Metatron, Lucifer) and folklore (Jack Frost, Pixie). Any trickster or rebel figure from myth can become a fitting original Persona.

Can I use these names for Persona 5 Royal and Strikers characters?

Yes. The list includes Royal additions such as Sumire Yoshizawa, Takuto Maruki and Cendrillon, and Strikers characters like Zenkichi Hasegawa, Sophia and Akira Konoe, alongside original names that fit any entry in the series or a tabletop Persona campaign.
