Peanuts character names from Charlie Brown, Snoopy and Woodstock to Peppermint Patty and Pig-Pen, plus original names in the strip's style, such as Wendell Marsh, Knee-Patch, Joe Jukebox and The Mitten-Eating Snowbank.

About Peanuts character names

Charles M. Schulz drew Peanuts from 1950 to 2000, and the strip's names are as understated as its drawings. Charlie Brown is nearly always called by his full, plain name. Around him are kids known by a single name (Schroeder, Marcie, Frieda, Eudora) and kids known by a nickname that says everything, such as Pig-Pen and Peppermint Patty. Snoopy collects alter egos instead: Joe Cool, the World War I Flying Ace and a long line of World Famous professions. His brothers and sister have short, homely dog names (Spike, Belle, Marbles, Olaf, Andy), and Woodstock's little bird friends answer to plain human names like Bill, Conrad, Olivier and Harriet.

About one name in six on this page is a character name from the strip and the television specials, listed simply as a name for reference. The rest are new names in the same quiet style, not taken from the strip: mid-century neighborhood kids with plain surnames, single-name kids, candy and hyphen nicknames, new Joe personas and World Famous roles, beagle relatives and other pets, small birds with grown-up names, teachers and sports heroes who stay off the page, neighborhood legends in the spirit of the Kite-Eating Tree, and sandlot nicknames.

How to choose Peanuts character names

  • Say the full name the way the strip does. A plain first name and a short surname, like Wendell Marsh or Doris Webb, sounds right when another kid shouts it across a ball field.
  • For a nickname kid, pick one visible habit and hyphenate it: Knee-Patch, Jam-Hands, Mitten-String. Peanuts nicknames describe, they do not insult.
  • Give a pet a secret life. Put Joe in front of a hobby or World Famous in front of a job, as in Joe Roller Rink or The World Famous Lighthouse Keeper.
  • Name the smallest character the most grown-up thing you can think of. A bird the size of a teacup called Bertram or Mildred is the whole joke.
  • Turn a childhood frustration into a local legend. The Mitten-Eating Snowbank and The Homer-Robbing Fence follow the Kite-Eating Tree.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the main Peanuts characters?

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock, Lucy, Linus and Rerun van Pelt, Sally Brown, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Franklin and Pig-Pen are the core cast. Earlier and smaller roles include Shermy, Patty, Violet, Frieda, Eudora, Peggy Jean, Roy, Thibault and José Peterson.

What are Snoopy's siblings and alter egos called?

Snoopy's siblings in the strip are Spike, Belle, Marbles, Olaf and Andy, and the television specials add Molly and Rover. His best-known personas are Joe Cool, the World War I Flying Ace, the World Famous Author, the World Famous Attorney, the Masked Marvel, the Easter Beagle and Flashbeagle.

Which names here are from Peanuts and which are new?

Names such as Charlie Brown, Schroeder, Tapioca Pudding, Joe Shlabotnik and The Great Pumpkin are character names from the strip and its specials. Names such as Wendell Marsh, Knee-Patch, Joe Jukebox, Cousin Tumbleweed and The Great Rutabaga are new and only follow the style; after fifty years of strips, a match with a minor character can happen by chance. The Peanuts names are a reference block, not a full cast list, and this is a fan page with no link to the strip's owners.

Can I use these names for a pet, a story or a party?

Yes, that is what the original names are for: a beagle called Pockets, a canary called Bertram, a story about a kid named Howie Dunn, or place cards for a themed birthday party. The Peanuts character names belong to their owners and are listed for reference only.
