Nurgle Name Generator
Jolly daemons, Nurglings and bloated champions of Nurgle
Generate names for the servants of Nurgle in Warhammer: jolly Great Unclean Ones like Bolgrubb the Generous, Heralds and Plaguebearers like Tallyman Sevenquill, Nurglings like Squidge and bloated mortal champions like Thrond Sevenchins.
About Nurgle names
Nurgle is the Chaos god of plague and decay in Games Workshop's Warhammer settings, and the odd one out among the four: his followers call him Grandfather, and they are cheerful about it. His daemons chuckle, count and garden, and his mortal champions treat every blessing as a present from a doting relative. A name for one of his servants needs both halves, something that squelches and something fond.
The list is split by who is being named. Great Unclean Ones get big, rumbling names with a kindly title, such as Bolgrubb the Generous or Papa Gloopus. Heralds and Plaguebearers are the clerks of the Garden, forever tallying, so they are Herald Glub'ath, Tallyman Sevenquill or plain Mumblecount. Nurglings are short and silly (Squidge, Titterpip), and Beasts of Nurgle and Rot Flies are named like eager pets (Slobberchops, Buzzelda). Mortal champions, written with the Maggotkin of Age of Sigmar and the older Warhammer world in mind, pair a sturdy given name with a queasy surname, like Thrond Sevenchins. Cultists, a few daemon princes and a handful of Plague Marines round it out.
Fourteen familiar figures, among them Ku'gath, Epidemius and Gutrot Spume, are included so you can hear the style. Everything else was made up for this list, for your own army, warband or roleplaying character.
How to choose Nurgle names
- Choose the fond half first. Nurgle's servants talk like a big, damp family, so a title such as Papa, Nuncle, Gaffer, Auntie or Grandsire does half the work before the squelchy part arrives.
- Say it out loud. The style lives in soft, wet sounds: gl, bl, ub, og, urg. If a name makes you smile and wince at once, as Gurglemaw the Kindly does, it is in the right register.
- Match the size of the name to the size of the model. A Nurgling wants one or two syllables, a Plaguebearer a grumble of a name, and a Great Unclean One a full title that sounds like a toast at a family dinner.
- Work in a seven. Seven is Nurgle's sacred number, so a herald of the seventh row, a champion with seven chins or a unit of seven named models is an easy nod to the background.
- For mortal champions, start from a plain old-fashioned given name and spoil the surname. Thrond, Hob and Gudrun are ordinary; Sevenchins, Maggotfriend and Toadmother are what the Grandfather added.
Frequently asked questions
What do Nurgle names sound like?
Wet, round and oddly affectionate. Daemons have gurgling names with kindly titles, such as Thrumbolax the Ever-Laughing or Old Uncle Blorth, while Nurglings get playground names like Giggles and Snotkin. Mortal followers keep a human given name and pick up a surname that describes their blessings, as in Gorm Slugtongue.
Are these names from the Warhammer books?
Fourteen are, including Ku'gath, Rotigus Rainfather, Horticulous Slimux and Bloab Rotspawned, and they are there so you can hear the style. The rest were written for this list in the manner of the setting and none is presented as a name from Games Workshop's books. Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar are Games Workshop's settings and are named here only to say what the names are for.
Can I use these for a Death Guard army?
For the daemons that march beside it, yes. Only a handful of entries are Plague Marines, such as Plague Marine Gorvus Slake and Brother Halsk Dripvisor, because the Death Guard name generator already covers the legion in depth. This page is mostly daemons, Nurglings, beasts, cultists and mortal champions.
Does the list work for Age of Sigmar and the Old World as well as 40k?
Yes. The daemon names fit any of the three, since Great Unclean Ones, Plaguebearers and Nurglings appear in all of them. The mortal names lean toward fantasy, with Blightkings, sorcerers and harbingers such as Harbinger Ulf Greywheeze, and the cultists suit a 40k hive as well as a marsh village.
