Surnames of the Normans and the houses they founded
Browse 500 Norman surnames, one family name per entry: baronial names like de Warenne, de Clare and Mortimer, Fitz patronymics like FitzOsbern, nickname names like Giffard and Bigod, Hiberno-Norman families like Butler and Prendergast, and Channel Islands names like de Carteret.
About Norman last names
A Norman surname usually says one of three things: where the family held land, whose son the first bearer was, or what people called him. The largest group here is the first kind, particle and all: de Warenne, de Clare, de Mandeville, d'Aubigny. Fitz comes from the Old French word for son, so FitzOsbern and FitzGilbert are patronymics. Nickname and office names needed no particle: Giffard, Bigod, Basset, Malet, le Despenser.
Every entry is a single surname, and each family appears once, in the form it is best known by. That is why Percy, Neville and Seymour stand in later English spelling beside de Bohun and de Lacy. A handful of houses famous under two forms have both, such as de Warenne and Warren, de Brus and Bruce, de Burgh and Burke.
The list follows the Normans outward: the baronage of England after 1066, Hiberno-Norman families such as Butler, Roche and Prendergast, houses of Scotland and the Welsh March such as Comyn and Braose, and the Hautevilles of southern Italy. A few names belong to allies who came with them: FitzAlan, de Gael and de Dinan were Breton, de Gant Flemish. Channel Islands families such as de Carteret and Poingdestre, and Normandy surnames that grew from Norse personal names, such as Anquetil and Toutain, complete it.
How to choose Norman last names
- Match the form to the period. For a story set between 1066 and about 1200, use the particle and Fitz forms such as de Montfort and FitzHamon. For later centuries the worn-down English spellings fit better: Percy, Vernon, Sackville.
- Remember that an early Fitz name changed with each generation: the son of a FitzGilbert named Richard would have a son called FitzRichard. Only later did names such as FitzGerald and FitzWilliam become fixed family names.
- Place a family by region. Butler, Burke and Roche belong to Ireland, Bruce, Comyn and Sinclair to Scotland, Braose and Turberville to the Welsh March, and de Carteret, Le Marchant and Dumaresq to Jersey and Guernsey.
- For full names in the pattern of a given name plus de Warenne or FitzWalter, use the Norman name generator, which pairs period given names with surnames like these.
- Do not read ancestry into a surname. A name in this list tells you where the name began, not who a present-day bearer descends from.
Frequently asked questions
What are some well-known Norman last names?
Among surnames still widely borne today, Butler, Burke, Barry, Warren, Bruce, Sinclair, Montgomery and Power all go back to Norman or Anglo-Norman families. In medieval records the names that come up again and again are baronial ones such as de Clare, de Lacy, de Warenne and Mortimer. The page does not rank names by how common they are.
What does Fitz mean in a Norman surname?
Fitz is the Anglo-Norman form of the Old French word for son, so FitzWalter is the son of Walter. Most Fitz names began as patronymics and became fixed later, as FitzGerald and FitzMaurice did in Ireland. FitzAlan is in the list although that family was Breton. FitzPatrick and FitzRoy are left out: the first is a Gaelic name in Norman dress, and the second was given to later royal children born outside marriage.
Why do some names have de and others do not?
De means of, and it pointed to the estate a family took its name from, as in de Mandeville or de Tosny. As French faded from everyday use in England the particle usually dropped away, which turned de Percy into Percy and de Vernon into Vernon. Each family is listed once in its best-known form, and a handful that are famous both ways, such as de Brus and Bruce, appear twice.
Does a Norman surname prove Norman ancestry?
No. A surname shows where a name began, not the descent of everyone who carries it today, and many people came by these names long after the Middle Ages. Later lists that claim to name the companions of William the Conqueror are not reliable evidence either. Use the list for period fiction, games and as a starting point for your own family research.
