A New Zealand name only sounds right when it reflects who actually lives there. Roughly two thirds of Kiwis are Pākehā, descended largely from English, Scottish and Irish settlers, which is why Scots surnames such as McKenzie, Fraser, Campbell, Ferguson and Murray are far more common than in England, and why Ross, Cameron and Duncan turn up as both first and last names. Popular given names track Australia and Britain closely: Charlotte, Isla, Amelia and Olivia for girls, Oliver, Noah, Jack and Hunter for boys, with an older generation of Trevors, Garys, Raewyns and Glenyses.

Māori names are the other essential layer. Given names often carry plain meanings: Aroha (love), Anahera (angel), Moana (sea), Wiremu (William), Hēmi (James), Nikau (a native palm), Manaia (a guardian figure), Kahurangi (precious blue). Surnames may be transliterated Christian names such as Ropata, Hohepa and Pita, ancestral names like Ngata, Pomare and Waititi, or carry the article Te (Te Whare, Te Kanawa). Macrons mark long vowels and are increasingly written. Auckland is also the largest Polynesian city in the world, so Samoan and Tongan names (Sione, Tevita, Malia, Tuilagi, Fifita) and a growing Indian and Chinese population (Priya Patel, Wei Chen) belong in any realistic list.

Modern Kiwi families mix all of this: a Māori first name with a Scottish surname, or a hyphenated Walker-Henare, is completely ordinary.
