About New Zealand last names

New Zealand surnames come from several directions at once. The largest share arrived with British and Irish settlers from the 1840s, and the Scottish part is strong: Otago and Southland were settled largely from Scotland, which is why Campbell, McKenzie, Fraser and Cargill sit beside Smith and Wilson. Names tied to the country's own story, such as Hillary, Seddon, Holyoake and Meads, are part of the mix.

Māori had no inherited surnames before the 19th century. Families then took an older personal name as the family name, or a Māori form of an English or baptismal name: Tāmihana comes from Thompson, Piripi from Philip and Horomona from Solomon. Macrons mark long vowels, as in Pōmare and Rātana, though many records leave them off. Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands and Niuean families, most of them in Auckland, add names such as Tuilagi, Lemalu, Fifita, Marsters and Talagi.

Smaller strands are just as much New Zealand's own. Dalmatian gum diggers and winemakers in the north left names such as Yelavich, Babich and Nobilo, many ending in ich. Chinese families go back to the Otago goldfields. Dutch names such as De Boer and Verhoeven came after the Second World War, and Patel, Singh and Wang are now frequent in the cities. A surname on this list does not prove ancestry or iwi.

How to choose New Zealand last names

  • Place the family first. Otago and Southland lean Scottish, with names like Cargill, McGlashan and Begg, the Far North has Dalmatian names such as Yelavich and Srhoj, and South Auckland has many Samoan and Tongan names.
  • Keep the macron when you write a Māori name in a New Zealand setting: Pōmare, Tāmihana, Tirikātene. Older documents and many databases drop it, so you will see both forms for one family.
  • Do not assume a name tells you who someone is. Many Māori families carry English or Scottish surnames, and names like Tapsell and Manuel are well known in Māori communities.
  • Say Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands or Niuean when you know which it is. Pasifika names come from separate languages, and none of them is Māori.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in New Zealand?

Long-settled British names such as Smith and Wilson are among the most widespread, and Singh, Kaur and Patel are now very frequent among younger New Zealanders. This list is not ranked, because we have no reliable count for every name. It aims for the range of names you meet in the country instead.

What are some Māori last names?

Ngata, Parata, Waititi, Mahuta, Pōmare, Tamihere and Te Kanawa are all in the list, along with many others. Some are older personal names that became family names, and others are Māori forms of English names, such as Wirihana from Wilson and Kerehoma from Graham. The list leaves out the names of iwi, waka and atua, which are not surnames.

Why do some New Zealand surnames end in ich?

They are Croatian names from Dalmatia. Families came to dig kauri gum in Northland from the late 1800s, and many later planted vineyards around Auckland. Yelavich, Babich and Radich are examples from the list, and Nobilo and Selak are Dalmatian names with other endings.

Are Samoan and Tongan surnames Māori?

No. Samoan names such as Tuilagi, Lemalu and Faumuina and Tongan names such as Fifita, Taumalolo and Tupou come from their own languages and islands. They belong on a New Zealand list because large Pasifika communities live here, above all in Auckland.
