About na'vi clan names
Na'vi clans (olo' in the language) are named with the same constructed phonology Paul Frommer built for the Avatar films, which is why Omatikaya, Metkayina, Tayrangi, Tipani and Anurai all feel like they come from one world. The sound inventory is small and distinctive: ejectives written px, tx and kx, a glottal stop marked with an apostrophe, the vowels ì and ä, and the syllabic rr and ll. There is no b, d, g or j, and words end in a vowel or in p, t, k, m, n, ng, l, r or the glottal stop. Clan names tend to run three or four syllables and most end in an open vowel, which gives them a flowing, chanted quality.
The films name the forest-dwelling Omatikaya, the reef-dwelling Metkayina, the Tayrangi ikran clan, and from Fire and Ash the volcanic Mangkwan (the Ash People) and the airborne Tlalim wind traders. Frontiers of Pandora adds the Aranahe, Zeswa, Kame'tire and the lost Sarentu, while the 2009 game gave us the Tipani, Anurai, Kekunan, Tawkami and Olangi. Clans are also described by their home and their mount: the ikran clan of the Eastern Sea, the pa'li riders of the plains. This list mixes those canon names with original ones that obey the same rules, plus a few English-style descriptors to pair with them.
Tips for choosing a name
- Say the name aloud with the stress on the second-to-last syllable, as most canon clan names take it: o-ma-ti-KA-ya, met-ka-YI-na. If it trips, simplify a cluster.
- Tie the clan to a biome and a mount; the films always do. Reef clans (Metkayina, Ta'unui) sound softer, while forest and mountain clans use more ejectives and glottal stops.
- Avoid the sounds Na'vi lacks. A clan name with a b, d, g, j or a final s will read as generic sci-fi rather than Pandoran.
- Pair a Na'vi clan name with an English descriptor in narration, the way the films say "the Metkayina, the reef people", so readers remember it.
- For a character's formal name, put the clan after te: Neytiri te Tskaha Mo'at'ite uses the family name, but fan works often slot the clan name in the same position.
Frequently asked questions
What are the canon Na'vi clans in Avatar?
The films feature the Omatikaya, Metkayina, Tayrangi, Ta'unui, Mangkwan (Ash People) and Tlalim (Wind Traders). Frontiers of Pandora adds the Aranahe, Zeswa, Kame'tire and Sarentu, and Avatar: The Game introduced the Tipani, Anurai, Kekunan, Tawkami, Olangi, Li'ona and Ni'awve.
How do Na'vi clan names sound different from character names?
Character names are usually two or three syllables (Neytiri, Lo'ak, Tsu'tey) and often carry the glottal stop. Clan names run longer, three to four syllables, and almost always end in an open vowel such as -a, -i or -e.
Can I use these clan names in Avatar fan fiction or a tabletop game?
Yes. The original names here are free to use for fan fiction, RPG campaigns and original Pandora stories. The canon clan names belong to the Avatar franchise and are listed for reference.
What does olo' mean in Na'vi?
Olo' is the Na'vi word for clan, and olo'eyktan means clan leader. Eytukan, Tonowari and later Jake Sully hold the title olo'eyktan, while the tsahìk is the clan's spiritual leader.
