Bangs Theory for a salon and Grout of This World for a tile installer both pass: you hear the original, you know the business, and the name is short enough to fit on a sign.

Consumer-facing local trades with lots of competition: salons, barbershops, bakeries, coffee shops, food trucks, pizza and taco spots, pet grooming, lawn care, plumbing, pest control, cleaning and small retail shops. They work less well for law, finance and medical practices, where one light pun in the tagline is usually enough.

Puns on idioms, proverbs and generic phrases are safe. Puns on specific trademarked brands or character names are riskier, because the trademark owner can object even to a joke. Movie and song titles sit in the middle: titles themselves are usually not trademarked, but avoid copying logos or artwork. When in doubt, run the name through the USPTO trademark search before registering it.

List the key words of your trade (cut, hair, dough, brew, leaf, pipe, paw), then write out words they sound like (hare, doe, blue, leave, pipe dream, pause). Next, list famous phrases containing the sound-alike words and swap in your trade word. Keep the ones that still sound natural when you say them aloud, and test them on a few people who have never heard the joke.
