Non-Binary Name Generator

Non-binary names come from a few reliable places. The largest group is names that were already used for boys and girls at similar rates in the US and UK for decades: Jordan, Taylor, Casey, Riley, Avery, Morgan and Cameron all peaked as truly unisex names in the 1990s and 2000s, which is exactly why they feel neutral now. A second group is surnames turned first names (Ellis, Parker, Sawyer, Emerson, Hollis, Merritt), which carry no gender history at all. The third and fastest-growing group is nature and word names such as Wren, Ash, Sage, River, Rowan and Sky.

When picking a name for yourself, people usually care about how it sounds next to their surname, whether it has a natural nickname, and how it reads in different settings: Alex and Sam disappear into a crowd, while Zephyr or Onyx announce themselves. Many people also keep the first letter or the sound of a birth name so old friends and paperwork feel continuous, turning Katherine into Kit or Nathan into Nat.

For fiction, the same rules apply, with one extra: a non-binary character's name is strongest when it fits their culture and era rather than defaulting to a nature word. A 60-year-old character named Leslie, Robin or Marion is just as neutral as a teenager named Kai.
