MLB Team Name Generator
Fictional big league franchises for real cities
Fictional MLB team names that pair real metro areas with traditional nicknames, from Portland Ospreys and Charlotte Dogwoods to Montreal Snowy Owls. Made for expansion talk, relocation what-ifs, Out of the Park Baseball and MLB The Show.
About MLB team names
Major League Baseball has 30 clubs. The American League has the Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, White Sox, Guardians, Tigers, Royals, Twins, Astros, Angels, Athletics, Mariners and Rangers. The National League has the Braves, Marlins, Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Cubs, Reds, Brewers, Pirates, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Padres and Giants. If you came for the real names, that is the full set.
This generator is for the teams that do not exist yet. Expansion to 32 clubs has been talked about for years, with Nashville, Portland, Salt Lake City, Charlotte and Montreal among the cities named most often, and every relocation rumor starts the same argument about what the new club should be called. Each name here pairs a real metro area, state or region with a nickname in the big league tradition: animals, birds, water, weather, colors and Sox, local industry, landscape and a few legends.
None of the entries is meant to be a real club, past or present, and none uses a group of people as a mascot. Use them for expansion leagues in Out of the Park Baseball, custom teams in MLB The Show, fiction, mock drafts and trivia nights.
How to choose MLB team names
- Match the nickname to the place. Tulsa Derricks, Omaha Boxcars and Tucson Telescopes work because each one points at something the city is known for.
- Test the name in a headline and a box score. A good big league name shortens cleanly, the way Red Wolves becomes the Wolves and Snowy Owls becomes the Owls.
- Keep it easy to chant and easy to stitch across a jersey. One or two short words after the city is the big league habit.
- Building a whole league? Draw from several styles, so the standings mix animals, weather, colors and industry instead of reading like a zoo.
- Planning to use a name for a real team or on merchandise? Search it yourself first. Minor league, college and semi-pro clubs have used a great many nicknames over the years.
Frequently asked questions
How many MLB teams are there and what are they called?
There are 30, with 15 in the American League and 15 in the National League. All 30 nicknames are listed in the introduction above, from the Orioles to the Giants. The generator itself is for fictional clubs.
Are any of these names real MLB teams?
No. The list was drafted to stay away from real clubs, present and past, but more than a century of minor league, college and semi-pro baseball has used a huge number of nicknames, so an overlap with some club somewhere can happen. Search a name yourself before you use it in public.
Which names suit an expansion team in OOTP or MLB The Show?
Pick a city from the usual expansion talk and a nickname with a local reason. Nashville Fiddles, Portland Ospreys, Salt Lake City Summits, Charlotte Dogwoods and Montreal Snowy Owls all read like clubs that could be announced tomorrow. For a relocation story, regional names such as Carolina Lighthouses leave room for a whole state to adopt the team.
Why are there no nicknames based on groups of people?
Nicknames built on a group of people tend to age badly, and Cleveland changed its name to the Guardians for the 2022 season for that reason. This list keeps to animals, birds, places, objects, weather, colors and ideas, which are easier to draw as a logo and safer to live with for decades.
