MLB Player Name Generator

People reach for a random MLB player generator for two different jobs. The first is a game: immaculate grid, "name a player" trivia, or a keeper draft where everyone gets a random legend. For that, this list seeds in about a hundred real all-time greats, from dead-ball names like Honus Wagner and Three Finger Brown through the Negro League stars, the 1970s Big Red Machine, and modern Hall of Famers like Mariano Rivera and Ichiro Suzuki. Every real name is a retired or deceased legend; no active player appears.

The second job is building a roster that does not exist yet: a created player in MLB The Show, a fictional franchise in Out of the Park Baseball, or a sports novel. The remaining names are invented to pass the lineup-card test. They follow the actual demographics of an Opening Day roster: Midwestern Scandinavian and German surnames, Cajun names from the Louisiana pipeline, Italian and Irish names from the Northeast, Dutch names from Michigan, Black American names, Dominican, Venezuelan, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Colombian and Curaçaoan names with their accents kept, Japanese and Korean imports, a few Australians and Canadians, and a block of throwback nicknames like Pudge, Skeeter and Hambone.
