NFL team names are the most conservative in American sports. Nearly every franchise follows the same template: a city or state, then a plural nickname that signals toughness or local identity. Steelers for Pittsburgh's mills, Packers for Green Bay's meatpackers, 49ers for the gold rush, Saints for New Orleans' patron feast day. Animals (Bears, Eagles, Ravens, Jaguars) and warriors (Vikings, Raiders, Buccaneers, Titans) fill out the rest. Singular concept names like the NBA's Heat or Magic almost never appear.

That is why the most convincing fictional NFL names sound like they could have existed in the AFL, USFL or XFL. Many on this list actually did: the Birmingham Stallions, Michigan Panthers, Houston Gamblers, New Jersey Generals, Memphis Showboats and Philadelphia Stars were real USFL clubs; the Canton Bulldogs, Duluth Eskimos and Pottsville Maroons were 1920s NFL teams; the Battlehawks, Roughnecks and Sea Dragons come from the XFL and UFL. Those names carry instant credibility for a relocation storyline or an alternate-history league.

For Madden franchise mode, sim leagues or a novel, pair a plausible expansion market (San Antonio, St. Louis, Portland, Salt Lake, Toronto, Mexico City, London) with a nickname rooted in that place: Lumberjacks for Portland, Gunslingers for San Antonio, Archers for the Gateway City. Keep it plural, keep it punchy, and check that it fits on a helmet.
