About metis names
The Métis are a distinct Indigenous people whose homeland runs from the Red River across the Canadian Prairies and into the northern United States. The nation took shape in the fur-trade country of the late 1700s and early 1800s, among the families of First Nations women and French Canadian voyageurs or Scottish, Orkney and English Hudson's Bay Company men. Their descendants built their own culture, with the Michif language, the buffalo hunt, the Red River cart and the sash, and with leaders such as Cuthbert Grant, Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont. Canada's Constitution Act of 1982 names the Métis as one of the country's three Aboriginal peoples. The word is not a general label for mixed ancestry.
Métis names carry that history. French family names such as Desjarlais, Parenteau and Letendre sit beside fur-trade names such as Isbister, Flett and Inkster, and given names follow the parish registers: Jean-Baptiste, Josephte, Marguerite, Cuthbert, Magnus. A "dit" name joins two surnames with the French word for "called", as in Bérard dit Lépine. Over time most families kept only one half.
This list mixes Red River names of the 1800s with present-day Prairie names and family names on their own. Each pairing is a plausible combination, not the record of a real person.
How to choose metis names
- Match the name to the community. A French Catholic parish such as St. Boniface or St. François Xavier suggests a name like Josephte Beauchemin, while the English-speaking parishes down the Red River suggest Duncan Isbister or Mary Flett.
- Set the era with the given name. Josephte, Cuthbert and Toussaint read as the 1800s, while Darren, Crystal and Tyler on the same family names belong to the present day.
- Use a dit name for one generation and the short form for the next, the way many families went from Bérard dit Lépine to plain Lépine.
- For family history, treat these names as examples only. Real ancestors are found in parish registers, census returns and the Métis scrip records held by Library and Archives Canada.
- Writing fiction? Tie a character to place and kin, such as a river lot, a cart brigade or a wintering camp, and leave the stereotypes out.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Métis "dit" name?
It is a double surname from French Canada, where "dit" means "called" and links a family's older name to a second one. The list has entries such as Julien Bérard dit Lépine and Geneviève Genthon dit Dauphinais. Over the generations most families dropped one half, which is why Lépine and Dauphinais also stand alone as surnames.
Why does a Métis list have Scottish and Orkney surnames?
The Hudson's Bay Company hired many of its men in Orkney and the Scottish Highlands, and the families they founded with First Nations and Métis women are part of the Métis Nation. That is the source of names like Duncan Isbister, Mary Flett and Christiana Linklater. French given names on these surnames, as in Jean-Baptiste McGillis, show how closely the French and English-speaking communities were tied.
Are these the names of real people?
No entry is meant as a real person. The family names and given names are real and common among Métis families, so a pairing such as Rhonda Fleury or Pierre Nault will match somebody past or present by chance. The full names of well-known leaders, Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont among them, were left out on purpose.
Does the list include Michif or First Nations personal names?
No. Michif is the language of the Métis, but the names written down in Red River parish, census and scrip records are overwhelmingly French, Scottish and English, and this list stays with them. It does not make up Michif-looking names or meanings. Cree and Ojibwe personal names belong to those nations and are not repeated here.
