Generate mead hall names in the tradition of Heorot and Valhalla: Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon compounds like Hrafnsalr and Wulfheall, sign-style names like The Golden Antler, and halls named for the jarl who built them. Ideal for D&D, Skyrim-style settings, Viking fiction and historical games.

About mead hall names

The great mead halls of the sagas were named simply and proudly. Heorot, Hrothgar's hall in Beowulf, means 'hart', and the stag's antlers were probably mounted on its gable. Valhalla is Valholl, 'hall of the slain', and Odin's other hall Gladsheim is 'bright home'. Old Norse built hall names from a descriptive word plus salr (hall), heimr (home) or gardr (enclosure), while Old English used heall and sele: Hrafnsalr and Hrefnsele both mean Raven Hall. The generator includes those historical forms, modern English compounds like Stagheart Hall, and halls named after the chieftain whose roof it was, since in the sagas a hall is almost always 'Eirik's hall' before it is anything else.

A mead hall is not a tavern. It is the jarl's own house, where the war-band eats, sleeps, swears oaths and receives gifts of rings from their lord. The best names carry that weight: the hearth, the long fire, the high seat, the shield-wall hanging on the rafters. Sign-style names like The Golden Antler or The Drowned Horn work for a hall that has opened its benches to travellers, which is the usual fantasy-game compromise.

Pick by function: a king's hall, a frontier longhouse, a sea-raiders' landing hall or a god's hall in the heavens each want a different register.

How to choose mead hall names

  • Use the Old Norse -salr, -heim and -gard endings, or Old English -heall and -sele, when you want the hall to sound like it belongs in a saga rather than a fantasy tavern.
  • Name the hall after its owner or builder (Skallagrim's Hall, Hall of Jarl Sigvald) when it matters who rules there; sagas do this constantly and it instantly gives you an NPC.
  • Animal and weapon imagery signals the hall's character: stag and hart for kingship, raven and wolf for war-bands, whale and keel for sea-raiders, bee and comb for a hall famous for its brewing.
  • For Skyrim-style or D&D settings, a short English compound (Winterholm, Thunderfell, Ravenscar Hall) is easier for players to remember than an authentic but unpronounceable Norse form.
  • Decide whether the hall welcomes strangers. A jarl's private hall takes a proud name; a hall that sells mead to travellers can take a friendlier sign name like The Warm Welcome or The Honey Bear.

Frequently asked questions

What were real mead halls called?

The famous ones are literary: Heorot ('hart') in Beowulf, and Valhalla, Gladsheim, Bilskirnir and Sessrumnir in Norse myth. Real halls excavated at Lejre, Uppsala and Borg are usually known by their site, which is why many names here simply attach 'Hall' to a place or a chieftain.

What is the difference between a mead hall and a tavern?

A mead hall was the private feasting hall of a king or jarl and the home of his retainers, not a business. Taverns sold drink to anyone. In fantasy games the two often blur, so the generator includes both proud lordly names and sign-style names suited to a public house.

Can I use these names for a Skyrim or D&D settlement?

Yes. Names like Winterholm, Stormhold Hall and Hall of the Broken Shield were written with tabletop and video-game settings in mind, alongside saga-accurate forms for players who want authenticity.

How do I build my own Norse-style hall name?

Take a single strong image (raven, oak, stag, iron, gold, frost) and attach a hall word: -salr or -heim for Old Norse, -heall or -sele for Old English, or plain 'Hall' or 'Hearth' for English. Hrafn + salr gives Hrafnsalr; Gold + sele gives Goldsele.
