Marathi Team Name Generator
Marathi names with meanings for every team
Generate Marathi team names for cricket and kabaddi sides, office and college teams, quiz groups, dhol-tasha troupes and gaming squads: Marathi names with an English meaning such as Garjana (The Roar) and Vaghini (The Tigresses), place names like Sahyadri Tigers and Sinhagad Strikers, and friendly ones like Vada Pav Warriors and Kadak Chaha (Strong Tea).
About Marathi team names
Marathi team names come in two families, and this list of 500 has both. The first is a Marathi word or phrase that says what the team is about: Garjana (The Roar), Zunjar (The Fighters), Ajinkya (The Unconquerable), Vaghini (The Tigresses). The second is the way local leagues name their sides, a place in Maharashtra plus an English team word: Sahyadri Tigers, Sinhagad Strikers, Koyna Dynamos.
The names fall into ten groups: animals and birds, courage and victory words, forts and hills, rivers, coast and regions, cities with their -kar forms (a Punekar is someone from Pune, a Satarkar from Satara), cricket, kabaddi and old playground games, festival and dhol-tasha troupes, food, office and college life, and women's teams. Every name that is wholly Marathi carries its English meaning in parentheses, and so do most blends, as in Vagh Warriors (Tiger).
Marathi is written here in Latin letters without accent marks, the way most people type it on a phone. The words are Marathi forms, not Hindi ones: vagh for tiger, hatti for elephant, sinha for lion. The list leaves out the names of deities, rulers, communities and political parties. Ask a Marathi speaker to read a name before it goes on a jersey or a banner.
How to choose Marathi team names
- Keep the meaning beside a Marathi name the first time you use it. Mohim Fatte (Mission Accomplished) and Khind Ladhavu (We Will Hold the Pass) land better in a mixed group once everyone knows what they say.
- Match the name to the game. Chadhai (The Raid) and Pakad (The Tackle) are kabaddi words, Chaukar Shatkar (Fours and Sixes) and Ashtapailu (The All-Rounders) belong to cricket, and Prashnamanjusha (The Quiz) suits a quiz team.
- For a banner or a jersey, write the name in Devanagari as well. Ask someone who reads Marathi to spell it, because Latin letters hide the difference between sounds such as the two kinds of d and of l.
- Use a -kar name only if the team really is from that town. Assal Satarkar and Amhi Punekar are a boast about home, and they sound odd on a team from somewhere else.
- Keep fort names and words like Mavale in a proud register, because they carry history for many people in Maharashtra. Save the jokes for the food names: Vada Pav Warriors, Extra Pav Please and Chaha Zala Ka? (Had Your Tea Yet?).
Frequently asked questions
What are good Marathi team names?
Garjana (The Roar), Zunjar (The Fighters), Ajinkya (The Unconquerable) and Mohim Fatte (Mission Accomplished) are short, easy to chant and clear in meaning. For a place name with a mascot, try Sahyadri Tigers, Sinhagad Strikers or Koyna Dynamos.
What are funny Marathi team names for an office or college group?
Food and daily life give the friendliest jokes: Vada Pav Warriors, Cutting Chaha Club (Half-Glass Tea), Kam Chalu Ahe (Work in Progress), Udya Karu (We Will Do It Tomorrow) and Shevatcha Bak (The Back Bench). They tease the team itself and nobody else.
What do the Marathi words in these names mean?
Vagh is tiger, garud is eagle, zunjar is a fighter, garjana is a roar, gadi are players, a mandal is a club and a pathak is a troupe. A katta is the spot where friends hang out, and chaha is tea. Each all-Marathi name in the list has its meaning in parentheses.
Are these the names of real teams or leagues?
No. The pairings are made up for your own team and are not meant to copy any professional franchise. Real places such as Raigad, the Sahyadri and the Godavari appear in them, and any name here could match a local club somewhere, so search before you enter a tournament.
