Generate cricket team names for club, school, corporate, tennis-ball and fantasy sides: franchise-style names like Coastal Cobras and Monsoon Kings, and puns on the game's own words such as Just Googly It, Ministry of Silly Points and Slogdog Millionaires.

About cricket team names

Cricket team names come in two broad kinds. The first is the franchise name that the T20 leagues made familiar: a city or region followed by a plural with some swagger, usually Kings, Royals, Strikers, Warriors or Titans. The franchise-style names here follow that pattern but are built mostly on generic geography, a coast, a harbor or a hill station, as in Coastal Cobras, Spice Coast Strikers and Seven Hills Sultans.

The second kind is the pun on cricket's own vocabulary. A googly is a leg-spinner's ball that turns the other way, a yorker lands at the batter's feet, a maiden is an over in which the bowler gives away no runs, silly point is a fielding position close to the bat, a duck is a score of zero, and howzat is the appeal to the umpire. That gives you Just Googly It, New Yorkers, Iron Maidens, Ministry of Silly Points, Golden Ducks and Howzat Possible.

The list also covers the sides people really run: gully and tennis-ball teams (Tape Ball Tigers, Six and Out), office elevens (Out of Office XI, Reply All Rounders), fantasy line-ups (Wrong Captain Again) and traditional club and pub names such as Old Orchard Cricket Club and Royal Oak Ramblers.

How to choose cricket team names

  • For a league entry, take a franchise-style name and replace the place with your own. Your town, suburb, housing society or company in front of Strikers, Royals or Titans reads as a real side at once.
  • Pick the pun that fits how your team plays. A side of hitters can be Slogdog Millionaires or Six Shooters, and a bowling side can be Seam Team, Spin Doctors or Toe Crushers.
  • Self-mocking names are a club tradition. Lower Order Collapse, Butter Fingers and Extras Top Scored tell the opposition you are there for the tea as much as the result.
  • Check that the name fits the scorebook and the scoring app. Two or three words such as Monsoon Kings or Sticky Wickets are easier to write, shout and abbreviate than a full sentence.
  • Fantasy leagues fill up with the same famous puns, so scroll further and take a less common one, such as Carrom Ballers or Nurdle Turtles.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good cricket team name?

It should be easy to shout, short enough for a scorebook, and either sound like a proper side or make the opposition smile. Franchise-style names such as Harbor City Hawks and Delta Dynamos do the first job, and puns such as Crease Lightning or Umpire Strikes Back do the second.

Are any of these the names of real T20 franchises?

They are not meant to be. The franchise-style names pair generic geography, such as a coast, a harbor or a hill station, with a common plural like Strikers or Royals instead of a real franchise city. The list has not been compared with any league's records, and with thousands of clubs in the world a local side may share one, so search the name in your own competition before you register it.

What does XI mean in a cricket team name?

XI is the Roman numeral for eleven, the number of players in a cricket side, so Out of Office XI simply means the Out of Office eleven. It is a traditional ending for invitational, school and works teams, which is why President's XI and Staff Room XI sound established without trying.

Do these work for tennis-ball, box and gully cricket teams?

Yes. One group of names is written for exactly those games, including Tennis Ball Titans, Gully Boys, Box Cricket Bosses and the house rules every street side knows, such as One Hand One Bounce and Over the Fence Is Out. Several use Hindi and Urdu words, for example toofan (storm), bijli (lightning) and dosti (friendship).
