Manchu Name Generator
Given names and clan names of the Manchus
Generate Manchu names from the Jurchen, Later Jin and Qing periods: given names such as Dorgon, Hooge and Songgotu, clan names such as Niohuru and Guwalgiya, and the clan-plus-given form historians use, as in Niohuru Ebilun.
About Manchu names
The Manchus, who founded the Qing dynasty and ruled China from 1644 to 1912, descend from the Jurchens of the northeast, and their names work differently from Chinese ones. Every Manchu belonged to a clan, or hala, such as Aisin Gioro, Niohuru, Guwalgiya, Heseri, Fuca or Nara, but the clan name was not used as a surname. In daily life and in official papers a person went by the given name alone, so the regent was simply Dorgon and the general simply Agui. Historians put the clan in front, as in Niohuru Ebilun, to tell people apart.
Given names are often plain Manchu words. Dorgon means badger, Ajige little, Sahaliyan black and Fiyanggu youngest child. The list runs from the Jianzhou Jurchen chiefs and the founders of the Later Jin, through the regents and generals of the 1600s, to mid-Qing statesmen such as Fuheng and Agui. Women's personal names were rarely written down, so only a few appear, among them Abahai, Gundei and Mangguji.
The spelling is the standard scholarly romanization with its diacritics left off, so Šurhaci appears as Surhaci. Where a clan stands before a given name, the pairing is illustrative. Some match the record, as Guwalgiya Oboi does. Most set a recorded given name beside a recorded clan name and are not historical persons.
How to choose Manchu names
- Use the given name alone in dialogue and narration. A Qing document would call Fuca Fuheng simply Fuheng, and nobody addressed him by his clan.
- Match the name to the period. Nurhaci, Eidu, Fiongdon and Yangguri belong to the late 1500s and early 1600s, while Chinese-style names such as Fuheng, Agui and Mingliyang are typical of bannermen in the 1700s.
- Pick the clan for its standing. Aisin Gioro is the imperial clan, and Niohuru, Guwalgiya, Heseri, Fuca, Nara, Tunggiya and Donggo supplied many of the dynasty's ministers, generals and consorts.
- For a woman, choose one of the few recorded personal names, such as Abahai, Nunje or Emeci, or follow the records and call her by her clan, as in Lady Niohuru.
- Treat a clan-plus-given pairing as a naming model. A pairing like Tatara Yunggui or Sakda Jangtai is not a claim that such a person lived, so look a name up before you present it as history.
Frequently asked questions
Did Manchus have surnames?
Not in the Chinese sense. Each person belonged to a clan, the hala, such as Aisin Gioro, Niohuru or Guwalgiya, and knew it well, but it was not spoken or written as part of the everyday name. People were called by the given name alone, which is why the sources speak of Dorgon, Oboi and Songgotu. Forms like Heseri Sonin or Nara Mingju are a convention of historians.
What do Manchu given names mean?
Many are everyday words. Dorgon means badger, Ajige means little, Sahaliyan means black, Nikan means Chinese and Fiyanggu was a name for a youngest child. From the 1700s onward more and more Manchus chose auspicious names of Chinese style, such as Fuheng, while still using them without a clan name.
Are the names in this list historical people?
The single given names and the clan names are ones recorded in the Jurchen, Later Jin and Qing periods. Some clan-plus-given entries match a recorded figure, for example Aisin Gioro Dorgon, Niohuru Ebilun and Janggiya Agui. Most of the others pair a recorded given name with a recorded clan name as an illustration of the form and should not be read as real persons.
Why are there so few women's names?
Qing genealogies and court records usually identify a woman by her clan and her rank, not by a personal name, so most are known only as a lady of the Niohuru or the Fuca clan. The list includes the handful that were written down, such as Abahai, Gundei, Nunje, Mangguji, Emeci, Monggo Jerjer and Hahana Jacing, and does not invent others.
