Generate male superhero names: codenames built on Man, Mister, Captain, Doctor, King, Lord, Sir, Lad and Boy, such as Man of Granite, Captain Ironbeard, The Storm King and Sir Dauntless, next to a small set of iconic published heroes like Superman and Black Panther.

About male superhero names

Male superhero names have carried their markers in plain sight since the 1930s. Superman, Batman and Hawkman put Man on the end of a theme, Captain America and Doctor Fate borrowed a rank or a title, and younger heroes got Boy or Kid. Later heroes often dropped the marker for a single word, so Wolverine, Cyclops and Daredevil read as male only because readers know the characters.

This list keeps the marker. Forty-five entries are iconic heroes from Marvel and DC, included for reference. Another forty-five are figures of myth and legend such as Beowulf and Galahad. The rest are new names in the classic molds: Man names (Man of Granite, Aero-Man, Helmsman), Mister, Captain and Doctor titles (Mister Longshadow, Captain Ironbeard, Doctor Tesseract), kings, princes and lords (The Storm King, Prince Ember, Tidelord), knightly Sir names (Sir Dauntless), Lad, Boy, Son and Brother names for younger or legacy heroes (Tempest Lad, Son of Atlas), male animals and masters (Iron Stag, Skymaster), and Golden Age style names with a first name in front (Jack Tempest, Rex Rampart).

Captain and Doctor are not male by rule, and famous heroines carry both, but comics gave them to men first. The new names were not compared with any publisher's catalog, so search a codename before you publish under it.

How to choose male superhero names

  • Pick the mold before the word. Man suits a bright, classic hero (Beacon Man), a title like Doctor or Mister suits a thinker or a veteran (Doctor Gravitas), and Lord or King suits a hero with a realm to protect (Lord Highwater).
  • Match the marker to the age. Lad, Boy and Son names such as Volt Lad or Son of Thunder fit a sidekick or a legacy hero, and they leave room to grow into a Man or Captain name later.
  • Say it as a shout and as a headline. A codename has to work when a bystander yells it across a street and when it runs across the top of a newspaper.
  • Tie the second word to the power or the origin. Riptide Man and Tidelord point to water, Sir Ironhelm and Tungsten Man to armor, Captain Northwind and Boreas to wind and cold.
  • Search the codename before you publish. Short Man and Captain names have been used many times since the 1940s, and the published heroes in this list belong to their publishers.

Frequently asked questions

Which published superheroes are in the list?

Forty-five well-known ones, among them Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther, Thor, Green Lantern, Nightwing and Moon Knight. They are there for reference, costume ideas and comparison, and they belong to their publishers. Another forty-five are figures of myth and legend, and the rest are new names in the same styles.

What makes a superhero name sound male?

Usually a marker: Man, Boy or Lad on the end, a title such as Mister, Sir, Lord, King or Prince in front, or a male figure from myth. Man of Granite, Sir Dauntless and The Storm King all show it at a glance. A single neutral word only reads as male once readers know the character, so this list pairs such words with a marker.

Can I use these names for my own character?

Use them as a starting point for an OC, a tabletop hero, a costume or a story. We have not compared the new names with any publisher's catalog, and a short codename may already be in use somewhere. Search the name before you publish or sell anything under it, and keep the published heroes to fan works.

Are there names for teen heroes and sidekicks?

Yes. The Lad, Boy, Son and Junior names are written for younger heroes, for example Tempest Lad, Lantern Boy, Son of the Storm and Bulwark Junior. They pair well with an older hero from the same list, such as Doctor Tempest or Mister Bulwark.
