Generate surnames from North Macedonia, from Trajkovski, Stojanovski and Proeski to Delčev and Koneski, with feminine forms such as Nikolovska and Risteska as entries of their own. The list rests on the -ski, -ovski and -evski family and the western -oski and -eski forms, with a smaller share of -ov and -ev.

About Macedonian last names

Most surnames in North Macedonia are built the same way: a forefather's given name plus an ending. Nikolovski goes back to a Nikola and Trajkovski to a Trajko. The endings -ov and -ev mean of or belonging to, -ski makes an adjective, and the most common type stacks the two into -ovski and -evski. In the west and southwest, around Ohrid and Prilep, the v drops out and the same names end in -oski and -eski: Naumoski, Proeski, Koneski. Plain -ov and -ev, as in Delčev and Pandev, are heard more in the east.

A woman carries the feminine form. Swap -ski for -ska and add -a to -ov or -ev, so a Petrovski's daughter is Petrovska, a Risteski's is Risteska and a Gočev's is Gočeva. The list gives feminine forms as entries of their own.

Not every name is a patronymic. Some come from a trade or title: Kovačevski from kovač, a smith, Grnčarov from a potter, Popovski from pop, a priest. The list also has family names of the country's Albanian, Turkish and Vlach communities, among them Ahmeti, Osmani, Elmas and Guli, which do not change with gender. Macedonian entries are Latin transliterations of Cyrillic, with č, š, ž, gj, kj and dž. Albanian names keep their own spelling, with xh and q.

How to choose Macedonian last names

  • Match the ending to the character. A man is Trajkovski, Risteski or Gočev; his sister or daughter is Trajkovska, Risteska or Gočeva. Reroll until the ending fits rather than changing it by hand on a name you do not know.
  • Use the ending as a quiet regional hint. Naumoski, Sedloski and Koneski suggest a family from the west or southwest, Pandev and Šopov the east, while -ovski and -evski names such as Dimitrievski fit anywhere, Skopje included.
  • Decide how to treat the marks and keep to it. Abroad they are usually dropped, so Miloševski becomes Milosevski and Šopov becomes Sopov. One family should have one spelling.
  • Read the stem for backstory. Popovski points to a priest among the forefathers, Kovačev to a smith, Bojadžiev to a dyer, and a name that starts with Hadži, such as Hadžinikolov, to an ancestor who made a pilgrimage.
  • For a full name, take a first name from the Macedonian Name Generator. A married woman who keeps both names joins two feminine forms with a hyphen, as in Petrovska-Risteska.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Macedonian last names?

The names met most often are the ones built on the old everyday given names: Stojanovski, Nikolovski, Trajkovski, Jovanovski, Petrovski and Ristevski, with their feminine forms Stojanovska, Nikolovska and so on. All of these are in the list. It is not ranked, so rarer names such as Šumulikoski or Čakalarov come up just as often.

What does -ski mean in a Macedonian surname?

It is an adjective ending that means of or belonging to. Added to the possessive -ov or -ev it gives -ovski and -evski, so Nikolovski is roughly of Nikola's family. Other Slavic languages, Polish among them, share the -ski ending, but the -ovski, -evski, -oski and -eski patterns built on given names are typical of North Macedonia.

How do Macedonian last names change for women?

The ending takes a feminine form. Names in -ski end in -ska, and names in -ov and -ev add an a: Dimitrievski and Dimitrievska, Koneski and Koneska, Šopov and Šopova. The Albanian, Turkish and Vlach family names in the list, such as Ademi or Elmas, stay the same for men and women.

How do Macedonian surnames differ from Bulgarian and Serbian ones?

Mostly in the ending. Bulgarian surnames usually end in -ov or -ev and Serbian ones in -ić, while the typical Macedonian surname ends in -ski. All three kinds are found in North Macedonia, and the -ić ending is written -ikj in Macedonian transliteration, as in Ristikj and Antikj.
