About Liberian names
Liberian names draw on two stocks that grew together long ago. One is English: the country was settled from 1822 by free and freed Black Americans, and surnames such as Tubman, Dennis, Sherman, Cooper and Cheeseman go back to that history. The other is the naming of the country's sixteen officially recognized ethnic groups, among them the Kpelle, Bassa, Grebo, Kru, Gio, Mano, Loma, Krahn, Vai and Gola.
Many indigenous names work as both given name and family name, because a father's name often became the surname of his children: Flomo, Sumo, Kollie, Saye, Paye and Zinnah all turn up in both places. Gio and Mano families name children by birth order, with Saye, Nyan and Paye for the first sons and Kou, Yah and Yei for the first daughters. A very common shape is an English or biblical first name, an indigenous middle name and a surname, as in Emmanuel Saye Dahn. Many Liberians write the first name as an initial and go by the middle one: J. Sumo Kollie.

How to choose Liberian names
- For a close fit, match the given name and the surname by region. A birth-order name like Saye or Kou sits naturally with surnames such as Dahn, Mehn or Karnwea, and Nyema or Wede with southeastern surnames like Togba or Glay.
- Do not read a background from an English surname alone. Cooper, Johnson, Roberts and Dennis are carried by Liberians of every origin, so place a character with a given name, a middle name or a home county instead.
- For an official or professional character, try the initial form. T. Wleh Koffa or G. Nyan Karnwea reads like a name on an office door in Monrovia.
- Keep the Liberian spellings. Saah and Siah are written Sahr and Sia across the border in Sierra Leone, and Decontee and Dehkontee are two spellings of one name.
- Octavius, Lafayette, Wilhelmina and Charlesetta have an old-fashioned ring that suits a grandparent. A younger character is more likely to be Emmanuel, Princess, Patience or Comfort with an indigenous middle name.

Why do so many Liberians have English names?
Liberia was settled from 1822 by free and freed Black Americans and became independent in 1847, with English as its official language. Settler families brought their surnames, and English and biblical given names spread through churches and schools. Today a name with one English part and one indigenous part, such as Esther Kollie or Garmai Johnson, is entirely ordinary.
How do Liberian birth-order names work?
Gio and Mano families traditionally name a child by its place among the sons or daughters: Saye, Nyan and Paye for the first three sons, Kou, Yah and Yei for the first three daughters. Kissi families in Lofa County have a set of their own that includes Saah, Tamba, Siah, Kumba and Finda. Because so many people share these names, a second name tells them apart, as in Samuel Nyan Paye or Martha Kou Mehn.

No one in particular. Each entry pairs given names and family names that are in use in Liberia, and with names this widespread some combinations will belong to living people by chance. The list was drafted to leave out the full names of well-known public figures, but it has not been checked against any register.
