LGBT Book Name Generator
Queer book titles from rom-com to memoir
Browse 1,000 titles for books with LGBTQ leads, from The Groom's Other Groom and Her Girlfriend's Lighthouse to A Field Guide to Chosen Family and The Prince Who Wed His Knight. For novelists, zine makers, reading challenges and book clubs.
About LGBT book names
A title for a book with an LGBTQ lead often has one extra job: telling a browsing reader who the story is about. There are a handful of ways to do that, and this list uses all of them. Some titles pair two names (Arthur Adores Miguel), some lean on his and his or her and her (He Married Him in October, Her Wife's Winter Garden), some name the relationship outright (The Groom's Other Groom, Mrs. and Mrs. Delacroix), and some name the community: Pride, drag, chosen family, coming out.
The 1,000 titles are spread over fifteen shelves: gay rom-coms, sapphic romance, trans and nonbinary coming-of-age, first-love young adult, chosen-family novels, small-town homecomings, historical fiction of hidden letters, queer fantasy, science fiction, memoir, essays, poetry and Pride anthologies, cozy mysteries, quiet novels about marriages and families, and sports, holiday and workplace romance. Most memoir and essay titles carry a subtitle that states the subject, as in Late to My Own Life: Coming Out at Fifty.
The titles were drafted for this page and nobody has compared them with published books, so search any title you like on a bookseller site before it goes on a cover. Most of the list is about love, family and ordinary happiness; loss is a small and sober share.
How to choose LGBT book names
- Decide how the title signals its lead. Two names (Nora and Celeste, At Last), a possessive (His Fake Boyfriend's Real Family) or a community word (The First Pride in Pickett County) each promise a different kind of book.
- Match the shelf. Rom-com titles run long and chatty, literary titles go quiet (Two Veils, Hers and Hers), and a cozy mystery wants a crime and a setting (The Drag Bingo Murders).
- For memoir and essays, keep the short phrase for the feeling and let the subtitle state the subject, as in The Honest Years: Coming Out in the Navy.
- Swap in the names of your own characters. Most two-name titles still work when you change who is in them, and saying the result aloud tells you whether a name is too long.
- Search your shortlist on a bookseller site and a reader catalog before you commit. Short titles are the most likely to be on a cover already.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of LGBT book titles are in the list?
Fifteen groups, from gay rom-coms, sapphic romance and trans and nonbinary coming-of-age stories to chosen-family novels, historical fiction, queer fantasy, science fiction, memoir, essays, poetry and cozy mysteries. The Witch's Wife, Husbands of the Outer Belt and Death at the Pride Bake-Off show the range.
Can I use one of these titles for my own book?
Yes, as a working title or a starting point. Nobody has compared this list with published books, so some titles may already be on a cover. Search the exact wording on a bookseller site before you publish, and change it if a book in your genre already uses it.
Does the list cover gay book titles and sapphic book titles alike?
Yes. Titles with two men and titles with two women make up most of the list, and trans, nonbinary, bi, pan and asexual leads are a smaller share, about one title in eight. Two Grooms and a Borrowed Tuxedo sits beside Sapphic Sonnets and Trans Joy on a Tuesday.
How do I make a title show that the book has an LGBTQ lead?
Name the relationship or the community in the title itself. A pairing of two names, a his and his or her and her construction, a word such as husbands, wives, Pride or chosen family, or a memoir subtitle all do it. He Came Home with a Husband and Everyone at This Table Is Queer leave no doubt in a few words.
