Memoir and autobiography title ideas in several registers: reflective lines like What I Kept and I Remember It Differently, title and subtitle pairs like Last Call: A Memoir of Getting Sober, and themed titles on family, travel, work, faith and growing up.

About memoir names

A memoir title has two jobs: it lets the reader hear whose voice this is, and it hints at which slice of a life the book covers. That second job is the practical difference between the two forms. An autobiography usually runs from childhood to the present, while a memoir follows one thread, such as a marriage, a job, an illness or a single year. Titles follow suit. Autobiographies lean on plain labels, as in Work in Progress: An Autobiography, while memoirs favor an image or a line of speech.

The list covers the main shapes. There are reflective first-person phrases (What I Kept, I Remember It Differently), titles built on one concrete object (My Father's Toolbox, Papa's Accordion), and title and subtitle pairs where a short hook is followed by a plain explanation (Pain Scale: A Memoir in Numbers). The themes run through family, recovery, illness and grief, travel and place, working lives, faith and doubt, childhood and coming of age, humor, and legacy writing for children and grandchildren.

Treat each title as a pattern as much as a suggestion. Swap in your own city, job, relative or number of years and most of them still work, and the result will belong to your story instead of anyone else's.

How to choose memoir names

  • Start from a concrete object or moment in your manuscript, such as a recipe box, a toolbox or the bus out of town. Specific images are easier to remember than abstractions like journey or healing.
  • Let the subtitle do the explaining. A short, slightly mysterious hook followed by a plain statement of the subject, as in Foster: A Childhood in Nine Homes, gives readers both curiosity and clarity.
  • Match the tone of the title to the tone of the book. The Bangs Were a Mistake promises jokes, while My Mother, Forgetting promises something tender, and readers will hold you to it.
  • Say it out loud in a sentence: "My book is called..." If you wince, or need a second sentence to explain it, keep looking.
  • Search your favorite in online bookstores and library catalogs before you settle. Sharing a title with a well-known book makes yours much harder to find.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a memoir title and an autobiography title?

An autobiography covers a whole life in order, so its title is often a plain label or the author's name with a subtitle, such as The Uncut Version: An Autobiography. A memoir covers one theme or period, so its title tends to point at that theme with an image or a phrase, as in Chemo Tuesdays or The Bus Out of Town.

Should my memoir have a subtitle?

Usually yes, unless the main title already says what the book is about. A subtitle tells a stranger the subject in a few plain words, which helps in bookstore listings and search results. Pairs in this list such as Last Call: A Memoir of Getting Sober and Long Haul: A Trucker's Million Miles show the pattern.

What are some good memoir title ideas?

For a family story, try My Mother's Recipe Box or Three Sisters, One Bathroom. For recovery or grief, One Day at a Time, Eventually or After He Died, I Planted Tomatoes. For travel, Homesick in Three Languages, and for humor, Mistakes Were Made, Mostly by Me.

Can I use these titles for a family history or a personal essay collection?

Yes. Titles like For My Grandchildren, Before I Forget and Before the Stories Are Gone suit a privately printed family history, and the shorter reflective titles work well for essay collections, blogs and newsletters. Adjust names, places and numbers so the title fits your own facts.
