Generate Laotian last names on their own, in the spellings Lao families use: long compound surnames like Phommachanh, Inthavong, Keomanivong and Souvannavong, variant spellings like Sayavong and Xayavong, and Hmong clan names like Vang and Xiong.

About Laotian last names

Family names are a recent arrival in Laos. They became compulsory only in the 1940s, and until then most people went by a given name alone. When families chose a name, many built one from auspicious Pali, Sanskrit and Lao words, which is why Lao surnames tend to be long compounds. Common elements are vong (lineage), phomma (Brahma), intha (Indra), chan (moon), keo (gem), kham and souvanna (gold), seng (light) and xay (victory), as in Phommachanh, Inthavong, Keomanivong and Souvannavong.

Because each family chose its own, there are a great many Lao surnames. This list aims at names that Lao families carry and not at new compounds put together out of those elements, though some of its spellings are rare. Romanization varies: the same Lao sound is written s or x, and a final h is silent, so Sayavong and Xayavong, or Phommachan and Phommachanh, are one name in two spellings.

Laos is home to many peoples. A small share of the list is Hmong clan names such as Vang, Yang, Xiong and Moua, which work differently: everyone in the clan shares the name. A few Iu Mien names such as Saechao are here too. In Lao usage the given name comes first and the family name last, and people are addressed by their given name or a nickname.

How to choose Laotian last names

  • Put the given name first and the family name last, as in Khamla Inthavong. In conversation a Lao character is called by the given name or a nickname, and the surname is mostly for documents.
  • Pick one spelling for a family and keep it. Xayavong follows the romanization used in Laos, while Sayavong is closer to how the name sounds to an English speaker, and relatives in different countries sometimes end up with different forms.
  • Do not shorten a long surname to make it easier. Keomanivong, Souvannavong and Khaykhamphithoune are ordinary lengths for a Lao family name, and the everyday short form is the nickname, not a clipped surname.
  • For a Hmong character from Laos, use a clan name such as Vang, Xiong or Moua and not a Lao compound. The clan name tells other Hmong who the character's kin are.
  • If you need a complete name with a nickname attached, the Laotian name generator linked below gives full names. This page is for the family name alone.

Frequently asked questions

What are some well-known Lao last names?

Lao family names you are likely to meet include Phommachanh, Inthavong, Chanthavong, Sayavong, Phanthavong, Thammavong and Souvannavong. Among Hmong families from Laos, clan names such as Vang, Yang, Xiong and Lee are widely carried. All of these are in the list.

Why are Laotian last names so long?

Most were created in the twentieth century, when families were first required to have a surname, and many chose a compound of two or three auspicious words. Keomanivong joins words for gem, jewel and lineage, and Souvannavong joins gold and lineage. The result is a name of three to five syllables as a matter of course.

Are Sayavong and Xayavong the same name?

Yes. Lao script has one letter that is romanized as x in the system used in Laos and as s by many families abroad, and both are pronounced like an English s. The same goes for Saysana and Xaysana or Sayasane and Xayasane, and the list gives both forms for a number of names.

Are Hmong clan names Lao last names?

Hmong people are one of the peoples of Laos, but their naming system is their own. A Hmong surname is the name of a clan, such as Vang, Lor, Thao or Her, and it is shared by every member of that clan. This list includes them as a small share because many families from Laos carry them.
