Kung fu names come in layers. At the base is a real Chinese name, written family name first: Wong Fei-hung, Huo Yuanjia, Ip Man. Cantonese romanizations (Wong, Lam, Cheung, Kwok) suit the Southern styles of Guangdong and Hong Kong cinema, while Mandarin pinyin (Zhang, Liu, Gao, Xu) fits Northern Shaolin, Wudang and mainland settings. Mixing the two in one roster is normal in kung fu films.

On top of the name sits the nickname earned in the kwoon or the street: Iron Palm, Thunder Leg, Shadowless Kick, Drunken Cat. These describe a signature technique, a body-conditioning feat or a personality, and they are how rivals and students refer to a fighter. Teachers are addressed by title, Sifu for a teacher, Master or Grandmaster for a lineage head, Abbot or Elder for temple figures, usually followed by the surname alone. Styles themselves supply names too: Hung Gar, Wing Chun, Choy Li Fut, Eagle Claw and Praying Mantis all work as identifiers, and classic technique names like Black Tiger Steals the Heart and White Crane Spreads Wings are ready-made monikers.
