Rename your Kindle, Kobo or Nook with a bookish, punny or cozy device name instead of "Brett's 3rd Kindle". Includes literary references, reading puns and library-inspired names that look great in Manage Your Devices.

About kindle names

Every Kindle ships with a default device name such as "Sam's 2nd Kindle", and Amazon lets you change it in Manage Your Content and Devices or directly on the device under Settings, Your Account, Device Name. The name shows up when you send documents, share a Wi-Fi network, or use Whispersync across devices, so a good one is both fun and practical if you own more than one reader.

The most popular Kindle names fall into a few families. Reading puns are the biggest group: Tome Raider, Shelf Control, Prose and Cons, Pride and Paperwhite. Library and book-object names sound elegant and old-fashioned: The Athenaeum, The Folio, Ex Libris, Marginalia. Literary place names such as Pemberley, Manderley or Bag End work well for readers with a favourite book, and character names like Hermione, Matilda or Rory Gilmore signal your taste to anyone who sees the device list. Typography lovers go for Bookerly, Garamond or Em Dash.

A good e-reader name is short enough to read in a device menu, unique among your household's devices, and something you'll still like in three years. If several people share a Kindle account, pick names that identify the owner or the room, such as The Study or The Night Owl, so documents get sent to the right device.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Rename on the device under Settings, Your Account, Device Name, or on Amazon under Manage Your Content and Devices; the change syncs to your Send to Kindle email list within a few minutes.
  • If your household has several Kindles on one account, use names that identify the reader or the room (The Night Owl, Kids' Kindle, The Study) so Whispersync and Send to Kindle go to the right one.
  • Puns work best when they still make sense out of context; Shelf Control and Tome Raider are clear, while in-jokes may confuse the person you're sharing a book with.
  • Keep it under about 25 characters so it doesn't get truncated in the device menu or the Send to Kindle dropdown.
  • The same names work for Kobo, Nook, PocketBook and reMarkable devices, and for naming your Kindle's Wi-Fi hotspot or Goodreads shelf.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my Kindle's name?

On the Kindle, tap Settings, then Your Account, then Device Name and type the new name. You can also change it on Amazon.com under Account, Manage Your Content and Devices, Devices, by selecting the Kindle and choosing Edit next to the name.

Why does my Kindle say "2nd Kindle" or "3rd Kindle"?

Amazon numbers devices in the order they were registered to your account, so a replacement or upgrade becomes your "2nd Kindle". Renaming it removes the number and makes it easier to tell devices apart.

Does the device name matter for Send to Kindle?

Yes. When you email or share a document, you choose the destination from a list of your device names, so a clear name such as The Study or Paperwhite Palace helps you pick the right reader instead of guessing between duplicates.

Can I use these names for a Kobo, Nook or other e-reader?

Absolutely. Most e-readers and tablets let you set a device name in their settings, and bookish names like Ex Libris, The Folio or Marginalia suit any reader, not just Kindles.
