Irish Band Name Generator
Trad, ballad, céilí and Celtic punk band names
Generate Irish band names for trad groups, ballad bands, céilí bands, session bands and Celtic punk or Celtic rock acts, from The Rocky Road Rovers and Whiskey in the Jig to Tin Whistle Republic and An Cuan. The list of 1,000 mixes place-and-plural names, tune wordplay, instrument names and Irish-language names written with their fadas.
About Irish band names
Irish band names tend to say what kind of night you are in for. Ballad groups take the plain form of 'The' plus a place and a plural, as in The Rocky Road Rovers or The Slieve Bloom Ramblers. Céilí bands, which play for set and céilí dancing, are most often named for a place, so the céilí bands here use townland-style names made up for the list, such as Ballynaskerry and Knockadreen, instead of borrowing a known parish. Session and pub bands joke about the session itself (One More Tune, Mind the Fiddle Case).
The rest of the 1,000 names come from the music: instrument names (Tin Whistle Republic, Press and Draw), puns on jigs, reels, hornpipes and polkas (Whiskey in the Jig, Polka Face), family bands, singer-and-band lineups, names shaped like old tune titles, louder names for Celtic punk and Celtic rock acts, and wedding, showband and St Patrick's Day names.
Roughly one name in seven is in Irish, with its fadas. 'An' is the singular 'the' and 'na' the plural, and a feminine noun changes its first sound after 'an', which is why the fiddle is An Fhidil. Keep the accents on posters and online, because a dropped fada can change the word. The styles are mixed through the list, so every batch shows several kinds.
How to choose Irish band names
- Match the form to the gig: 'The' plus a place and a plural suits a ballad group, a place plus 'Céilí Band' suits a dance band, and a short Irish word or a single image suits a concert trad group.
- If you name the band after a real place, use one you have a claim to. A céilí band named for a parish it has never played in will be asked about it, and that parish may already have a band of its own.
- Before you print an Irish-language name, check the spelling and fadas with a fluent speaker or a dictionary such as teanglann.ie, and ask how it is said so the MC gets it right.
- Say the name the way it will be announced at a dance or over a pub PA. A pun such as Reel Estate has to work when it is heard, not only when it is read.
- Search the name before you commit: streaming services, Bandcamp, social handles and festival listings. Trad is full of local bands, and these names have not been compared with any of them.
Frequently asked questions
How are Irish céilí bands usually named?
Most are named for a place: a parish, a town, a river or a local landmark, followed by 'Céilí Band'. Because so many real places already have a band, the céilí bands here use townland-style names made up for the list, such as The Ballynaskerry Céilí Band and Drumlahane Céilí Band. Ireland has over 60,000 townlands, so one of them may still match a real place. Swap in your own place name if your band has a real home.
Are the Irish-language names spelled correctly?
They are everyday Irish words and phrases written with their fadas, for example An Cuan (the harbor), Ceol na Mara (music of the sea) and Cois Tine (by the fire). The list was screened, so ask a fluent speaker or check a dictionary before you put one on a poster.
What kind of name suits a Celtic punk band?
Celtic punk names pair trad words with noise, work and city streets. Try Cobblestone Riot, Steel-Toe Céilí, Tin Whistle Tantrum or The Dockside Hooligans. Short names with a hard consonant shout well and fit on a patch.
Could a real band already use one of these names?
Yes. Nobody has compared this list with real bands, and trad, ballad and wedding bands number in the thousands. Search streaming services, social media and local gig listings, and pick another name if a working band has it first.
