In Homestuck, every Alternian troll has an ancestor: a pre-Scratch legend of the same blood caste who lived thousands of sweeps earlier and whose story echoes in the descendant's life. Ancestors are never called by six-letter first names. They go by titles. Some are simple epithets with a definite article (The Signless, The Disciple, The Dolorosa, The Handmaid). Others attach an Alternian rank or job to a coined surname (Neophyte Redglare, Orphaner Dualscar, Marquise Spinneret Mindfang). A few carry their descendant's typing quirk baked into the spelling, like E%ecutor Darkleer for Equius and The Psiioniic for Sollux.

The titles usually reflect blood caste and role in the Empire. Highbloods get aristocratic or military ranks (Grand Highblood, Orphaner, Marquise, Her Imperious Condescension), midbloods get legal and religious posts (Legislacerator, Neophyte, Cultist), and lowbloods get titles that describe their suffering or trade (The Sufferer, The Helmsman, The Summoner).
