Generate Haitian town names from the coast to the high mornes: Jacmel, Petit-Goâve, Anse-à-Veau, Trou-du-Nord, Morne-Rouge, Fond-Baptiste, Nan Kafe. Real communes and localities sit beside invented names in the same style, for fiction, games and maps.

About Haitian town names

Haitian place names are written in French and spoken in Haitian Creole, so many towns have two forms: Cap-Haïtien is Okap, Jacmel is Jakmèl and Saut-d'Eau is Sodo. Most names describe the land in plain words. A morne is a hill, a fond is a valley floor and an anse is a cove, while trou, ravine, savane, saut and bassin name a hollow, a gully, a grassland, a waterfall and a pool. That is how the map gets Gros-Morne, Fond-des-Blancs, Anse-à-Veau and Trou-du-Nord. Saints, crossroads (Carrefour, Croix) and paired names such as Petit-Goâve and Grand-Goâve fill in the rest. Gonaïves and Jacmel are usually traced to Taíno names, and Hinche, Lascahobas and Ouanaminthe to Spanish ones.

This list holds 1,000 names from all ten departments: cities and commune seats, small communes, neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, coves and capes, hill and valley villages, rivers and springs, and Kreyòl names such as Nan Kafe and Mòn Kabrit.

Real places sit beside invented names built on the same patterns. A flat list cannot mark which is which, and Haiti has thousands of small localities, so an invented name can turn out to match a real one. Look a name up on a map before you settle on it.

How to choose Haitian town names

  • Match the landscape. Anse, Baie, Pointe and Port belong on the coast, Morne, Fond and Platon in the mountains, and Savane and Plaine on flat country such as the Central Plateau or the Artibonite valley.
  • Use the French form on a map or an official document and the Kreyòl form in dialogue. People in a story would say Okap, Jakmèl or Tigwav, not Cap-Haïtien, Jacmel or Petit-Goâve.
  • Keep the accents and hyphens. Petit-Goâve, Môle-Saint-Nicolas and Jérémie look wrong without them, and the grave accents of Kreyòl (Jakmèl, Mòn Kabrit) change how a name is said.
  • Add a qualifier to tell two towns apart, the way Saint-Louis-du-Nord and Saint-Louis-du-Sud do. Du-Nord, du-Sud or the name of a nearby river or plain turns a common name into one specific place.
  • Search a name before you use it. If your story needs a town that does not exist, make sure the name is not on the map; if it needs a real one, confirm the department and the spelling.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Haitian towns or made-up names?

Both. Jacmel, Marmelade, Ouanaminthe and Anse-à-Veau are real places, and many other entries are invented on the same patterns. The list does not mark which is which, and an invented name may match one of Haiti's many small localities, so look a name up before you treat it as fictional or as real.

What do Morne, Fond and Anse mean in Haitian place names?

They are landscape words. A morne is a hill or mountain, a fond is the low ground of a valley and an anse is a cove, so Morne-Rouge is a red hill and Anse-Rouge a red cove. Trou (hole or hollow), saut (waterfall), source (spring) and bassin (pool) work the same way in names like Trou-du-Nord, Saut-d'Eau and Bassin-Bleu.

Why are some names spelled differently, like Okap and Jakmèl?

Those are Haitian Creole spellings. Kreyòl writes a name the way it sounds, so Cap-Haïtien becomes Okap, Jacmel becomes Jakmèl, Petit-Goâve becomes Tigwav and Saut-d'Eau becomes Sodo. French and Haitian Creole are both official languages, and the list includes both forms for many well-known towns.

Which names fit a coastal town and which fit a mountain village?

For the coast, look for cove, bay and point names such as Anse-à-Canot, Baie-des-Flamants and Pointe-à-Mangle. For the hills, try Morne-Tonnerre, Platon-Cèdre or Fond-Calebasse, and for open country a savanna name like Savane-Carrée or Plaine-des-Cannes.
