The original Guild Wars enforced a rule that shaped a whole generation of character names: every name had to be at least two words, with each word starting with a capital letter. That is why Tyria is full of names like Devona Lionheart, Cynn Firestorm and Margrid the Sly, and why single-word fantasy names feel slightly off in a Guild Wars context. The best names pair a short given name with a descriptive surname, epithet or place of origin.

Each campaign carries its own linguistic flavor. Ascalon and Kryta lean on medieval European names such as Rurik, Adelbern, Althea and Stefan. Cantha draws on East Asian sounds, giving us Togo, Kisu, Kai Ying and Zei Ri. Elona blends North African and Middle Eastern roots, producing Koss, Tahlkora, Melonni and Dunkoro. Eye of the North added the Norn, whose names are Norse through and through: Jora, Egil Fireteller, Olrun Olafdottir. Asura names are short and clipped (Vekk, Zinn, Oola), while dwarves take Stonekin-style compound surnames.

When inventing your own, pick the region first, then match a given name to it, and finish with a surname that hints at profession or personality. A ranger might be Nyla Ashcroft, a Canthan assassin Sora Nightpetal, a Norn warrior Ragnar Icehide. Character names in Guild Wars are permanent, so choose one that will still feel right after a thousand hours in the game.
