Graffiti Crew Name Generator
Initials and phrases for writers' crews
Generate graffiti crew names on the convention writers use: initials with a reading such as NTK (Night Train Kings) and TFA (The Fresh Aerosol), two-reading crews like DOS (Drips On Steel / Days Of Style), and full phrases from Cap Kings to Open Wall Collective and Riverside Rollers.
About graffiti crew names
A graffiti crew is the group a writer paints with, and its name usually travels as initials: two to four letters added beside each member's own tag. The convention took shape with subway writing in 1970s New York, alongside the rest of hip-hop culture, and it still holds from freight yards to legal walls. Short letters are fast to write, fit beside a piece and read from a distance.
Most of this list follows that convention. Three-letter crews with a reading make up the bulk, such as NTK (Night Train Kings), TRW (Third Rail Writers) and FCF (Fat Cap Federation), with two-letter and four-letter crews beside them. Many crews keep a second reading of the same letters, so entries like DOS (Drips On Steel / Days Of Style) carry two. The rest are full phrases: train and yard names, old-school titles in the 1970s and 80s manner, neighborhood names, all-women crews, and sticker, stencil and paste-up crews.
Not every crew works at night. Mural collectives and legal-wall groups paint with permission and take commissions, and they tend to pick cleaner names such as Open Wall Collective or Main Street Murals. Whatever the tone, initials are short enough that another crew or a company may already use them, so search your letters first.
How to choose graffiti crew names
- Start from the letters. Pick two to four letters that are fun to draw together and that every member can write quickly, then find the reading. ACR (All City Regulars) and SOE (Style Over Everything) work because the letters look good before anyone knows what they stand for.
- Keep a second reading in reserve. FTL (Fill The Lines / Faster Than Light) shows how the same letters can carry two moods, one for the wall and one for the flyer of a paint jam.
- Search the initials before you commit. Three letters can already belong to another crew, a company, an agency or a group you would not want to be mistaken for, in your city or elsewhere. Nothing on this page has been compared with existing crews, so look the letters up yourself.
- Match the name to the work. A crew that paints commissioned murals and legal walls is better served by Open Wall Collective or Brick Bloom Murals than by a hard phrase, and a sticker crew can simply say so, as in SSC (Sticker Slap Club).
- Test it at small size. Write the letters beside a tag at marker width. If they close up into a blob or read as another word, change one letter.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make a graffiti crew name?
Most crews start with two to four initials and give them a reading, for example NTK (Night Train Kings) or TS4 (The Superb Four). Others use a short phrase without initials, such as Cap Kings or Riverside Rollers. Choose letters every member likes to write, then make sure nobody near you already paints under them.
Why do graffiti crews use initials?
Initials are quick to add beside a tag, fit in the corner of a piece and can be read from across a street or a platform. Three letters are the most common length, though two-letter and four-letter crews such as FF (Fill-In Family) and DRIP (Don't Rush It Please) are in this list too.
Can a crew name have more than one meaning?
Yes. Many crews keep several readings of the same letters, and members use whichever fits the moment. The list has entries built that way, such as DOS (Drips On Steel / Days Of Style) and RAW (Rails And Walls / Rollers At Work). You can also add a new reading later without changing the letters.
Are these names already used by real crews?
They were drafted as new names and were not copied from known crews, but they have not been compared with any record of real crews, companies or groups. With only two to four letters, a match somewhere is always possible. Search the initials together with your city before you paint them.
