About Australian Shepherd names

Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd is an American dog: the breed was developed on ranches in the western United States, where it worked sheep and cattle and became a familiar sight at rodeos. So the largest share of this list comes from the American West. There are towns and rivers such as Laredo, Pecos, Cimarron and Picketwire, and tack and rodeo words such as Cinch, Latigo, Dally and Short Go.

The second group comes from the coat and the eyes. Merle, the marbled pattern many Aussies carry, gives Marble, Confetti, Mosaic, Speckle and Blue Norther, and mismatched eyes give Oddball and Two-Tone. Then come herding and speed names (Drover, Outrun, That'll Do), names for the bobbed tail and the wiggle that goes with it (Bobtail, Wigglebutt, Two-Step), trail names (Hoodoo, Slickrock, Lodgepole) and small names for Mini Aussies (Skosh, Half-Pint).

Last comes the joke the breed invites: Australian names for a dog that is not Australian. Bondi, Banjo, Matilda, Jackaroo and Woop Woop are here, all in friendly everyday slang. Stub, Shorty and Queenie are a nod to the trick dogs Jay Sisler took around the rodeo circuit.

How to choose Australian Shepherd names

  • Say it across a pasture. Working Aussies are called from a distance, and two crisp syllables such as Dally, Pecos or Bondi carry better than a long name.
  • Keep the name clear of your commands. A dog that works on "away" and "come by" will be confused by being called Away or Comeby, so save those, and Whoa and That'll Do, for a pet.
  • Let the coat choose. Blue merles suit Slate, Storm, Pewter and Blue Roan; red merles suit Brick, Rojo and Strawberry Roan; any merle suits Confetti or Mosaic.
  • For a pair, take two names from one group: Cinch and Latigo, Bondi and Byron, Hoedown and Shindig.
  • Try the name for a week before it goes on a tag. If the puppy turns out to be more Ruckus than Yarrow, change it early.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool Australian Shepherd names?

Ranch and rodeo names are the classic choice for the breed: Laredo, Durango, Cimarron, Dally, Latigo and Bronc. For the merle coat, try Slate, Storm, Mosaic or Blue Norther, and for a fast dog, Zip, Blitz or Quicksilver.

Are Australian Shepherds really from Australia?

No. The breed was developed on ranches in the western United States. Its name is usually put down to sheep and herders that reached the West by way of Australia, which makes names like Sydney, Roo, Digger and Billabong a joke rather than a family tree.

What are good names for a merle Aussie?

Names for a broken, marbled pattern work best: Merle, Marble, Confetti, Speckle, Dapple, Terrazzo and Patchwork. Blue merles also suit Slate, Pewter and Bluebonnet, and a dog with two different eyes can be Oddball, Two-Tone or Mismatch.

Who were Stub, Shorty and Queenie?

They were Australian Shepherds trained by Jay Sisler, an Idaho rancher whose trick-dog act appeared at rodeos in the middle of the twentieth century and helped make the breed known. They are the only historical dogs on the list; every other entry is simply a name.
