Funny Anime Name Generator
Trope-powered joke names for parody anime characters
500 funny anime character names built on the tropes fans know, from Exposition-sensei and Background Student B to Prince Rhubarb of Planet Salad and Kenji the Overpowered at Level One. For parody OCs, fan comics, one-shots and group chats.
About funny anime names
A funny anime name works by saying the trope out loud. Every fan knows the teacher who explains the plot, the classmate in the seat by the window and the rival who comes back stronger without anyone seeing him practice, so Exposition-sensei, Classmate by the Window and The Rival Who Trains Offscreen get the laugh before the character says a word. The joke is always on the storytelling habit, never on the language or the people.
The list covers nine kinds of character. There are tropes given an honorific (Cliffhanger-kun, Monologue-sama), background and filler characters (Villager A, Filler Arc Villain No. 3), self-given dark titles that deflate halfway through (Demon King of the Lunch Line) and light-novel-style names that run too long (Mio, Level 999 but Very Tired). Food puns follow the old habit of naming a whole people after vegetables, here with English food words only: Prince Rhubarb of Planet Salad, Commander Zucchini. Ordinary Japanese given names get deflating epithets (Takeshi the Mildly Determined), and the rest are shonen rivals, mentors and announcers, magical-girl and mecha-pilot parodies, and mascots and sidekicks.
Every entry is a spaced character name for a parody OC, a fan comic, a tabletop one-shot or a group chat nickname.
How to choose funny anime names
- Pick the honorific by the role. In Japanese, -sensei is for teachers and masters, -senpai for a senior at school or work, -kun mostly for boys and juniors, -chan for someone small or cute and -sama for someone grand. Exposition-sensei teaches; Monologue-sama thinks very highly of himself.
- Long names are funniest in writing. Save Kaito, Banished for a Useless Skill (It Wasn't) for a character sheet or a comic caption, and use a short one like Villager A when the name has to be said aloud.
- For a tabletop one-shot, give every player a trope to play. A party of Overpowered-kun, Sidekick With the Only Map and Mentor Napping Under a Tree writes its own scenes.
- Build your own with the epithet pattern: take an everyday given name and add one small, honest flaw, as in Mayu the Perpetually Late.
- Check the character limit before you use a name in a game. Callsign Lukewarm and Minion C fit almost anywhere; the light-novel names will not.
Frequently asked questions
What are some funny anime character names?
Trope names get the quickest laugh: Exposition-sensei, Background Student B, The Rival Who Trains Offscreen and Hana Who Runs With Toast. For something sillier, try a food pun such as Prince Rhubarb of Planet Salad or a parody such as Magical Girl Pretty Deadline. All of these are in the list.
Are these names from real anime?
No. They are joke names about common anime tropes, written for parody characters and not taken from any series. A generic label such as Villager A can of course turn up in a show's credits, and this page has no connection to any studio or publisher.
Which honorific should a joke name use?
Match it to the character's standing. A teacher or master takes -sensei (Pop Quiz-sensei), an older student takes -senpai (Recap-senpai), a boy or a junior takes -kun (Cliffhanger-kun), someone small or cute takes -chan (Mascot-chan) and someone who expects respect takes -sama (Final Form-sama).
Are the names clean?
Yes. The humor is about storytelling habits such as recap episodes, tournament announcers and transformation sequences. There is no fan-service humor, and nothing makes fun of the Japanese language or of real people.
