Generate superhero codenames in French for comics, tabletop games and stories, each with a short English gloss: Capitaine Mistral, Le Chevalier Écarlate (the scarlet knight), La Foudre (the lightning), Le Lynx des Vosges and Docteur Zénith. The list runs from the rooftops of Paris to Quebec, Belgium and the stars.

About French superhero names

French builds a codename around the noun, not the person. The article agrees with the noun, so it is Le Lynx des Vosges and La Salamandre Dorée whoever wears the mask, and before a vowel or a silent h it shrinks to L', as in L'Hermine Écarlate. Colors and materials follow the noun: a scarlet knight is Le Chevalier Écarlate. Ranks and person nouns do change with the character. The list pairs Commandant Orage with Commandante Aurore and Docteur Zénith with Docteure Équation, and a guardian is Le Gardien or La Gardienne.

Every entry carries a short English gloss in parentheses, so you know what you are putting on a cape. The styles are mixed on purpose: animal and color names, ranks and titles, heroes tied to places from Montmartre and the Vieux-Port of Marseille to Brittany, Quebec, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland, power phrases such as Coup de Tonnerre, single words like Fulgurance and Panache, heroines, Belle Époque masked avengers in the spirit of the old newspaper serials, young sidekicks, a lighter comic group, and cosmic, mystical and science names.

The names were drafted as new codenames in these styles. A short natural word may still belong to a character in print somewhere, so search a name before you build a series on it.

How to choose French superhero names

  • Match the article to the noun, not the hero. La Vigie de Saint-Malo can be a man and Le Lynx des Vosges can be a woman. Only person nouns and ranks switch: Le Gardien becomes La Gardienne and Commandant becomes Commandante.
  • Keep colors and materials after the noun, as in Le Héron Cobalt and La Vipère Émeraude. A few short adjectives such as grand and petit go in front, which is why the list has Le Grand Hésitant and Le Petit Aimant.
  • Use the gloss as a guide, then drop it. The parentheses are there for you: on a character sheet or a cover, write Capitaine Mistral and leave the translation out.
  • Pick a regional name only when the setting supports it. Le Phare du Vieux-Port belongs in Marseille, L'Orignal du Saguenay in Quebec and Le Coq Wallon in Belgium, and readers from those places will notice a mismatch.
  • Keep the accents. Écarlate and Zénith are misspelled without them, and the Académie française asks for accents on capital letters as well. If your font cannot show them, choose a name that has none, such as Panache, Fulgurance or Capitaine Mistral.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say superhero in French?

Super-héros for a man and super-héroïne for a woman, traditionally written with a hyphen. Codenames rarely use the word itself. They take an article and a noun, as in Le Chevalier Écarlate, or a rank, as in Capitaine Mistral.

Why do some ranks appear in two forms?

French now uses feminine forms for many ranks and professions, so the list has Commandante Aurore beside Commandant Orage, Générale Foudre beside Général Rempart and Docteure Synapse beside Docteur Azimut. Capitaine is the same for both. The gloss marks the feminine form where the difference is easy to miss.

Do the names work outside France?

Most are neutral French that reads the same in Paris, Montreal, Brussels or Geneva, such as Fulgurance, La Rose des Vents or Le Gardien de l'Aube. A regional group is tied to specific places and words, including La Poudrerie and Le Coureur des Bois for Quebec, Le Ket de Bruxelles for Belgium and Le Jet d'Eau for Geneva. Choose from those when your setting matches.

Are any of these existing characters?

The names were drafted as new codenames, not taken from a comic, film or series. Short natural words such as Panache or Zéphyr may still have been used somewhere, so run a quick search before you put one on a cover.
