Generate shade names for foundation, concealer, skin tint and powder ranges: stones and woods like Alabaster, Golden Oak and Black Walnut, formulas like Light Neutral Buff and Rich Warm Sienna, coded shades like 220 Honeycomb and playful ones like Soft Launch.

About foundation shade names

A foundation range is named as a set, not one shade at a time. Many ranges describe each shade three ways: a depth word (fair, light, medium, tan, deep, rich), an undertone (cool, neutral, warm, golden, olive, rosy) and a pet name that makes the shade easy to remember. Some add a code, where a number rises with depth and a letter marks the undertone. This list of 1,000 names covers all of those forms for foundation, concealer, skin tint and powder: Fair Cool Shell, Medium Golden Sand, Deep Warm Umber, 220 Honeycomb, 4N Driftwood.

The names come from eight families: gems and stones, woods and earth, light and time of day, fabrics, landscapes and places, depth plus undertone formulas, numbered systems and playful modern names. Each family runs from fair through medium to deep, so one theme can name a whole range: Alabaster, Sunstone and Smoky Quartz, or White Linen, Camel Hair and Umber Velvet.

That spread is deliberate. A common complaint about shade ranges is that fair shades get gems and porcelain while deep shades get only food. No name here is an ethnic or national term, and none treats one tone as the default. Short color words are common in makeup, so search a name before it goes on a label.

How to choose foundation shade names

  • Name the whole range in one sitting. Pick a family, such as fabrics, and take a name for every depth you sell: White Linen, Wheat Linen, Camel Hair, Russet Wool, Umber Velvet.
  • Keep the depth word and the undertone in plain view. A pet name such as Sunstone is easy to remember, but a shopper online still needs Medium Golden or a code beside it to see where the shade sits in the range.
  • If you use codes, make your own system and keep it regular: numbers that rise with depth, one letter for the undertone, even steps between shades. Do not copy the numbering of a brand your customers already know.
  • Give every depth the same kind of name. If the fair shades are stones and fabrics, the deep shades should be too (Smoky Quartz, Mahogany Leather), not the only food names in the range.
  • Search each name together with the word foundation before you print it. Plain words such as porcelain, sand and honey are on many labels already.

Frequently asked questions

How are foundation shades usually named?

Many ranges combine three things: a depth word such as fair, light, medium, tan, deep or rich, an undertone such as cool, neutral, warm, golden or olive, and a pet name. Light Neutral Buff and Rich Golden Chestnut follow that formula. Others use a code plus a name, like 310 Cool Hazelnut or 6W Maple Syrup.

What do the numbers and letters in a shade code mean?

In many coded systems the number shows depth and rises as the shades get deeper, and a letter shows the undertone: C for cool, N for neutral, W for warm. The codes in this list also use G for golden, O for olive, R for red or rosy and P for peach, and L, M, T and D for light, medium, tan and deep. The codes here, such as 2W Shortbread, L3 Almond Milk and No. 6 Honey Jar, are made-up examples of the form. Build your own scale so it does not look like another brand's.

Why are there no shades called Nude or Natural?

Those words treat one skin tone as the default and every other shade as a departure from it. The list also leaves out ethnic and national terms and spreads each naming family across fair, medium and deep, so deep shades are not the only ones named after food. A range reads better when every shade gets the same kind of name.

Can I use these names for my own makeup line?

Use them as ideas and do your own checks first. Nobody has compared this list with the shades that brands already sell, and plain color words in particular will match some of them. Search the name and the brand registers of the countries where you sell before it goes on packaging.
