About female egyptian names

Ancient Egyptian women's names were short sentences, usually about a goddess or about the child herself. Nefertari is 'the most beautiful', Hatshepsut 'foremost of noble women', Meresankh 'she loves life', and Ankhesenamun 'she lives for Amun'. A few elements do most of the work: nefer (beautiful), meryt (beloved), henut (mistress), nebet (lady), sat or sit (daughter of), baket (servant of), and in later periods the prefix ta- ('the one of'), as in Tasheritenaset, 'the daughter of Isis'. Names of goddesses, especially Hathor, Isis, Mut, Neith and Bastet, were embedded directly, so Satneith and Merytmut are both perfectly formed names.

Women had no surnames. A queen was styled Great Royal Wife, a noblewoman Lady of the House, and many were Chantresses of Amun or priestesses of Hathor, so a full identifier reads like Meryt, Chantress of Amun, or Iyneferti, Lady of the House. Spelling is modern convention: Isetnofret and Isisnofret, Tausret and Twosret are the same woman.

The list begins with queens and princesses from Merneith in the First Dynasty to the Kushite and Ptolemaic eras, continues with attested commoners from tomb chapels and Deir el-Medina, then goddesses, original names built from authentic elements, and finally modern Egyptian names for contemporary settings.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose by period. Old Kingdom royal women have short names like Iput, Nebet and Khuit; New Kingdom names lean on Amun, Mut and Ra (Meritamun, Mutnedjmet, Sitre); Third Intermediate and Late Period names often begin with Ta-, Tadi- or Nes- (Tabiry, Tadibastet, Nesikhonsu).
  • Add a title rather than a surname: Lady of the House, Chantress of Amun, King's Daughter, Great Royal Wife or God's Wife of Amun. A mother's name also works: Senet, daughter of Henut.
  • Build your own by swapping the deity in a real name. Merytre (beloved of Ra) becomes Meryhathor or Merysekhmet; Satamun becomes Satneith; the result still reads as Egyptian without belonging to a real queen.
  • Avoid mixing eras in one family. A Ptolemaic Berenice or Arsinoe alongside Old Kingdom Hetepheres jars; a Greek-Egyptian household in Alexandria might plausibly carry both Greek and Egyptian names, but a Theban priestly family would not.
  • For a present-day Egyptian woman use the modern section: Arabic given names like Nour, Salma or Habiba, or Coptic names like Marina, Irini and Demiana, with a family name such as Hegazy, Mansour or Gerges.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most famous female Egyptian names?

Cleopatra (VII, the last Ptolemaic ruler), Nefertiti (wife of Akhenaten), Nefertari (wife of Ramesses II), Hatshepsut (a woman who ruled as pharaoh), Ankhesenamun (Tutankhamun's queen), Tiye (mother of Akhenaten) and Sobekneferu (the first confirmed female pharaoh) are the names most people recognise, and all appear in the list.

What do ancient Egyptian female names mean?

Most describe beauty, belonging or divine favour. Nefertiti is 'the beautiful one has come', Meritaten 'beloved of Aten', Satiah 'daughter of the moon', Henuttawy 'mistress of the Two Lands', Baketamun 'servant of Amun', Mutnedjmet 'Mut is sweet' and Tasheritenaset 'the daughter of Isis'.

Did Egyptian women have last names?

No. Women were known by a single given name plus a title or a parent's name, for example 'Iyneferti, Lady of the House' or 'Meresankh, King's Daughter of his body'. The names here are given in that single-name form; add a title from the tips if you need a fuller identifier.

Are these names suitable for modern Egyptian characters?

The ancient names would sound unusual for a woman born in Cairo today, where Arabic names like Mariam, Yasmin and Farida and Coptic names like Marina and Verena are the norm. The final section of the list gives modern Egyptian first names and first-name plus family-name combinations for contemporary settings.
