Create names in the style of the Fable games: earthy Albion villagers, earned hero titles, dandyish villains and cozy-gothic villages. Try Barnaby Figgins, Hobbe Basher, Nightshade Nell or Thornwick.

About Fable names

Fable is a series of action RPGs set in Albion, a storybook version of old England where heroes are celebrities, villagers comment on your haircut, and a well-aimed kick at a chicken can shape your reputation. The names follow the same recipe: homely English sounds with a wink, sitting beside something a little sinister. Towns are called Bowerstone and Oakvale, the marsh is Wraithmarsh, and a villain can be a dandy with a pistol.

This generator mixes ten kinds of name. There are full names for men and women of Albion such as Barnaby Figgins and Elsie Pennyroyal, earned titles like Hobbe Basher and Pie Thief, heroes with a title attached, rogues and villains such as Nightshade Nell, single-word Guild names like Bramble and Flint, and figures from the Old Kingdom. For your map there are villages, wild places, inns and shops, from Thornwick and Gibbet Fen to The Hobbe and Bucket.

In the first game you start out as Chicken Chaser and buy a grander title once you can afford one, so a title here is meant to be worn the same way: as the name the crowd shouts when you walk into town. The names are new inventions in the Fable style, not a roster of characters from the games.

How to choose Fable names

  • Pair a plain first name with a countryside surname. Albion names work best when one half is ordinary and the other half is a hedgerow, a bird or a pie.
  • Treat a title as something earned. Pick Hobbe Basher or Door Whisperer for what your hero has actually done in your story, then upgrade it later.
  • Let alignment show. A kindly hero suits Giles the Generous, while a horned one might answer to Promise Breaker.
  • Name places for their mood as well as their look. Duckling Green sounds safe, Hangman's Halt does not, and players will pick up the hint before anyone speaks.
  • For tabletop play, give every village one inn and one rogue from the list so each stop on the road has a hook.

Frequently asked questions

Is this for the Fable video games?

Yes. The names follow the style of the Fable RPG series and its setting of Albion, not fables in the Aesop sense. If you want storybook characters instead, the Fairy Tale Name Generator is a better fit.

Are these names from the games?

They are new names in the Fable style, not a roster of canon characters. A few borrow a famous in-game title, as in Wilf the Chicken Chaser, and place names such as Stonebower and Knotwood Glade deliberately echo Bowerstone and Knothole Glade. Some may still match a minor character by chance.

What makes a name sound like it belongs in Albion?

Albion names are English and earthy with a comic edge: a common first name, a surname from the farm or hedgerow, and sometimes a boastful title. Hettie Broadbean, Cedric Mudlark and Tobias the Tax Dodger all follow that pattern. Villains lean the other way, toward silk, titles and menace, as with Lord Ambrose Blackmere.

Can I use these for D&D or another RPG?

Yes. Nothing in the list depends on Fable's rules, so the villagers, inns and villages drop straight into any light-hearted fantasy campaign. The Hobbe and Bucket or The Kicked Chicken would suit a roadside inn in almost any setting, though you may want to swap hobbes and balverines for your own monsters.
