Generate essay titles that make a claim: argumentative, analytical, compare-and-contrast, personal narrative, and research paper titles with the classic 'Hook: Subtitle' structure. Useful for students, teachers assigning prompts, and academic writers polishing a paper.
About essay names
An essay title is a promise about the argument. The strongest academic titles use a two-part structure: a short hook, then a colon, then a subtitle that names the subject and the angle ("Borrowed Time: How Sleep Debt Rewrites the Adolescent Brain"). Argumentative essays often work as a claim in miniature ("Privacy Is a Collective Good"), a question the essay will answer ("Should Algorithms Decide Bail?"), or a phrase with a twist that signals a contrarian take ("The Marshmallow Test Reconsidered"). Literary analysis titles pair a theme with a text ("Silence as Resistance in The Handmaid's Tale"); personal essays favor concrete images ("My Father's Toolbox").
The titles here are grouped loosely by type: argumentative and policy essays, literary analysis, compare-and-contrast, history, science and technology, philosophy and ethics, culture and media, education and society, and personal narrative. Many are specific to a text, event, or debate so they double as prompts; others are patterns to adapt. Few contain "impact" or "exploring", the surest signs of a placeholder title.
A good working method: write the essay's thesis in one sentence, pull out its two most vivid nouns, and try them as the hook. Then add a subtitle only if the hook alone would leave a reader unsure what the paper is about.
Tips for choosing a name
- Write the title last, from the thesis: if your claim is that homework doesn't help young children, "The Case Against Homework in Elementary School" is already sitting in the sentence.
- Use the hook-colon-subtitle form for academic papers, but keep the hook to five words or fewer and let the subtitle carry the keywords.
- Cut throat-clearing words like "An Analysis of", "Exploring", and "The Impact of"; state the subject and the angle directly.
- For literary essays, name the text and the lens ("Ambition and Guilt in Macbeth") so a reader knows both what you read and how.
- Read the title aloud with the first sentence of the essay; if the title already says what the first sentence says, sharpen one of them.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good essay title?
It states the subject and hints at the argument or angle in as few words as possible, usually under twelve. Specific nouns beat abstractions, and a colon subtitle can add clarity when the hook is figurative.
Should an argumentative essay title be a question or a statement?
Either works. A statement ("Privacy Is a Collective Good") signals confidence and previews the thesis; a question ("Should Voting Be Compulsory?") invites the reader in but should be one the essay clearly answers.
How do I capitalize an essay title?
Use title case: capitalize the first and last words and all major words, but leave articles, short prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions lowercase unless they begin the title or subtitle. Italicize book and film titles inside your title (Beloved, Blade Runner).
Can I use one of these titles for my own paper?
Yes, freely; titles are not copyrighted. Just make sure the title matches what your essay actually argues, and adjust the subtitle so it fits your specific text or evidence.
