Generate How to Train Your Dragon names in the Berk tradition: blunt Viking compounds like Toothless, Stormfly, Hookfang and Skullcrusher for individual dragons, plus species-style names in the mold of Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare and Whispering Death.

About httyd dragon names

How to Train Your Dragon has two naming systems, and knowing which one you need is half the job. Individual dragons on Berk get blunt, affectionate names that describe a habit or a body part: Toothless for the Night Fury with retractable teeth, Stormfly, Meatlug, Hookfang, Skullcrusher, Cloudjumper, Windshear, Grump and Barf and Belch for the two-headed Zippleback. They are almost always one or two English words smashed together, chosen by a Viking rider, and they sound more like a nickname for a big dog than a name for a mythical beast. Toothless's offspring in The Hidden World continue the tradition with Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner.

Species names follow a different pattern set by the Book of Dragons: an alarming adjective plus a noun, or a single invented compound. Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Hideous Zippleback, Terrible Terror, Whispering Death, Screaming Death, Catastrophic Quaken and Smothering Smokebreath belong to the first type; Gronckle, Skrill, Thunderdrum, Scauldron, Timberjack, Typhoomerang, Razorwhip and Stormcutter to the second. Most species names hint at the dragon's signature attack or habitat, and many are puns (Typhoomerang, Submaripper, Hobgobbler).

The names above gather every canon dragon and species from the films, Riders of Berk, Race to the Edge and Rescue Riders, then add original Berk-style pet names, weather and stone names, and Book of Dragons style species names so you can name a rider's companion, a Night Fury OC, or an entirely new class of dragon.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name a pet dragon after a quirk or feature the rider notices first, the way Hiccup named Toothless: a smoky sneeze becomes Sootspit, a rock-eating Gronckle becomes Rockchomp.
  • Keep individual dragon names to one or two English words with a hard consonant in them (Hookfang, Skullcrusher, Grump); soft fantasy names like Aurelia or Zephyrus sound wrong in Berk's mouth.
  • For a new species, pair an alarming adjective with a plain noun (Catastrophic Quaken, Terrible Terror) or fuse two words into one (Stormcutter, Razorwhip) and decide its class: Strike, Stoker, Boulder, Sharp, Tidal, Mystery or Tracker.
  • Two-headed dragons get two names joined by and (Barf and Belch, Butt and Head), and Night Fury or Light Fury hybrids are simply Night Lights, so hybrids can take a name that blends both parents.
  • Match the tone to the rider: Snotlout and the twins give aggressive names (Hookfang, Barf and Belch), Fishlegs gives cosy ones (Meatlug, Fishmeat), Astrid gives sleek ones (Stormfly).

Frequently asked questions

What are the dragons' names in How to Train Your Dragon?

The main dragons are Toothless (Hiccup's Night Fury), Stormfly (Astrid's Deadly Nadder), Meatlug (Fishlegs' Gronckle), Hookfang (Snotlout's Monstrous Nightmare), Barf and Belch (Ruffnut and Tuffnut's Hideous Zippleback), Cloudjumper (Valka's Stormcutter), Skullcrusher (Stoick's Rumblehorn), Grump (Gobber's Hotburple) and the Light Fury, with Toothless's Night Light hatchlings named Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner.

How are HTTYD dragon species named?

Species names come from the Vikings' Book of Dragons and either pair a scary adjective with a noun (Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Whispering Death) or fuse two words into a single compound (Gronckle, Thunderdrum, Stormcutter, Razorwhip). Many hint at the dragon's attack, habitat or a pun, like Typhoomerang and Submaripper.

What should I name a Night Fury OC?

Follow Hiccup's lead and name it after a trait rather than something grand: Toothless, Dart, Pouncer and Ruffrunner are all observations about behavior. Names like Nightsnap, Duskwing, Sharpshot or Shadow Fury fit the Night Fury's stealthy, sleek personality without sounding out of place on Berk.

Can I use these dragon names for my own story or game?

The original names are free to use for fan fiction, roleplay, School of Dragons style characters and your own stories. Canon dragons and species names belong to DreamWorks Animation and Cressida Cowell's books, so treat those as reference rather than something to publish commercially.
