Call names for Doberman Pinschers, male and female: sleek dark names like Onyx, Velvet and Noir, coat names for red, blue and fawn dogs, Thuringian places such as Apolda and Wartburg, German given names like Fritz and Greta, and speed names like Jet and Mach.

About Doberman names

The Doberman was developed in the late 1800s in Apolda, a town in Thuringia in central Germany, and takes its name from Louis Dobermann, the man credited with creating it. That is why this list reaches for Thuringia before the rest of Germany: Apolda, Erfurt, Jena, Gotha, the Wartburg castle and the Rennsteig ridge trail all make short, unusual call names.

Most of the list is about the look of the dog. A black-and-rust Doberman suits sleek, dark and formal names (Onyx, Velvet, Noir, Top Hat), and the rust markings have names of their own, such as Copper, Bronze and Cognac. The breed also comes in red, blue and fawn, so there are names for those coats too: Merlot and Redwood, Slate and Pewter, Champagne and Isabella, the traditional word for the fawn color.

The rest is a mix: real German given names (Fritz, Greta, Tjark, Swantje), everyday German words like Samt (velvet) and Pfeil (arrow), speed and athlete names, noble titles, and a share of soft, ironic names such as Noodle and Velcro for owners who enjoy a joke at the expense of a serious-looking dog.

How to choose Doberman names

  • Say the name out loud the way you would call it across a park. One or two syllables with a clear consonant (Jet, Mach, Greta, Onyx) are easier to call than Dämmerung or Kyffhäuser, which work better as a formal name with a short call name.
  • Match the coat if you like color names: Onyx, Sable and Noir for black-and-rust, Merlot or Sedona for red, Slate or Pewter for blue, Champagne or Isabella for fawn.
  • Look up the meaning and the sound of a German word before you commit. Samt means velvet, Rabe means raven and Flink means nimble, and a German w is said like an English v, so Wartburg starts with a v sound.
  • Keep the name away from the cues you plan to teach. A name that rhymes with sit, stay, down or no will confuse a young dog, so say your shortlist next to your cues before you choose.
  • Ironic names work best when you can say them with a straight face at the vet: Noodle, Muffin and Velcro all pass that test.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a black-and-rust Doberman?

Dark and formal names suit the classic coat: Onyx, Raven, Noir, Obsidian, Velvet, Sable, Top Hat and Nocturne are all in the list. For the rust markings there are Copper, Bronze, Cognac and Burnish.

Are there German names for a Doberman in this list?

Yes. About a third of the list is German: given names such as Fritz, Bruno, Greta, Heidi, Liesl, Armin and Thekla, everyday words like Samt (velvet), Komet (comet) and Spatz (sparrow, also a pet name for a loved one), and places from Thuringia, the breed's home region, including Apolda, Erfurt and Jena.

What do you call a red, blue or fawn Doberman?

Red dogs suit warm names like Merlot, Redwood, Sedona and Garnet. Blue dogs suit Slate, Steel, Pewter and Blue Note, and fawn dogs suit Champagne, Wheat, Chamois and Isabella, a traditional name for the fawn color.

Does a Doberman need a tough name?

No. This list leaves out names built on attack or violence and offers elegant, fast and noble names instead, such as Vesper, Javelin and Viceroy. If you want the opposite, soft names like Muffin, Noodle and Sir Leans-a-Lot are there too.
